Ishpeming [ ˈɪʃpəmɪŋ ] is a city in Marquette County in the US state of Michigan in the United States . The city is considered the birthplace of ski jumping in the United States. In the northwest of the city is the Ishpeming Township , which has autonomous powers.

history

The establishment of the place goes back to the discovery of iron ore in the 1840s. After the Indian Madji-Gesick led the explorer Philo Everett to a "shiny" mountain, large ore deposits were found in this. The place that got the name Jasper Knob is now considered to be one of the greatest gems. Until 1862 the urban area belonged to the large settlement area of Lake Superior . Shortly afterwards the city gave itself its own name. After translation of ishpiming (German on the summit or sky ) from the language of the Anishinabe Indians, a local dialect of the Ojibwe , the name was followed as Ishpeming .

According to the 2010 census , Ishpeming had 6,470 people in 2,824 households. The population density was 285.8 people per square kilometer. In 1664 families there were statistically 2.85 people each.

The racial the population was composed of 96 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 1.1 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and 0.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.2 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.0 percent of the population.

21.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.3 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17 percent were 65 years or older. 51.8 percent of the population was female.

The Ishpeming Town Council consists of five members. They are each elected for four years and can serve a maximum of two terms. Mayor is Mike Tall .

Museums

Tower of the Cliffs Shaft Mine

Ishpeming is home to the Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum, a large mining museum that mainly exhibits exhibits from the mining era in the Ishpeming region. The museum also has a museum mine.

National Ski Hall of Fame

The place also houses the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame (officially the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum ).

Buildings

The St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church was the first Catholic church in Ishpming. Construction began in 1869 and was completed in 1870. In 1927 the old wooden church was torn down and a new church was built, which was consecrated in 1928.

The Mather Inn , a hotel built in 1875 by the city's founder Robert Nelson , has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 .

Sports

After Norwegian immigrants established ski jumping in the region, Suicide Hill, a facility with a total of five ski jumping hills, was built in Ishpeming in 1925 . The hill received its name in 1926 after the press called it that after a fall of jumper Walter Anderson. The Ishpeming Ski Club has been organizing an annual ski jumping tournament since 1887 , in which both national and international athletes take part. From 1999 to 2003 the ski jump was a station in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup .

On February 21, 1905, the US Ski Association was founded in Ishpeming. It is the forerunner of today's US Ski and Snowboard Association . The founder and first chairman was the skier and banker Carl Tellefsen .

Economy and Infrastructure

Ishpeming is located in the Marquette Iron Range, an area with large deposits of iron ore. Cleveland-Cliffs operates an open pit south of the city .

US Highway 41 crosses the northern part of the city from Fort Wilkins to Miami . The city is also part of the catchment area of ​​the Sawyer International Airport in Marquette .

From 1886 to 1951, Iron Ore was its own daily newspaper in Ishpeming.

education

For Ishpeming Public School District No. 1 includes three schools, Ishpeming High School , Ishpeming Middle School, and Birchview Elementary School. In the autonomous Ishpeming Township there is also the Westwood High School as well as the Aspen Ridge Middle and the Aspen Ridge Elementary School.
