Suicide Hill (" Suicide Hill ") is a facility with five ski jumps in Ishpeming , Michigan , USA .

history

Norwegian immigrants brought skiing to the states of Michigan , Wisconsin, and Minnesota . Ski jumping initially took place in several regions and on different hills. Above all, striving for as wide jumps as possible, the organizers kept building new constructions, which, however, also became increasingly dangerous. After a long search, the largest possible hill was finally found, which was converted into a ski jump in 1925. The following year, when Walter Anderson was injured while jumping, the local press wrote about Suicide Hill . Although the ski club initially fought against this name, it was later adopted. Work was carried out several times on the ski jump, the largest renovation took place in 1972 when the facility was expanded to its present size. In 2009 the small hills K40 and K13 were covered with plastic matting so that they could also train in summer.

In 1947, 1954, 1964, 1973, 1979 and 1987 the national ski jumping championships took place on the hill. From 1999 to 2002, several competitions were held as part of the Ski Jumping Continental Cup .

Since 1887 the Ishpeming Ski Club has organized an annual ski jumping tournament in which both national and international athletes take part.
