Bastian Kaltenböck (born July 23, 1983 in Hallein ) is a former Austrian skier who competed in ski jumping and occasionally in Nordic combined .
Career
Ski jumping
Kaltenböck grew up in Bischofshofen and also started for the local ski club. He made his international debut in the 2000/01 season in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup . In his first season he finished 127th overall with 53 points. The following 2001/02 season went far better . In January 2002 he reached his first two podium finishes as third in Ishpeming and Westby. In December 2002 the Austrian won his first Continental Cup in St. Moritz . As a result, on January 4th, 2003 in Innsbruck on the Bergiselschanze as part of the national group for the Four Hills Tournament 2002/03, he was given a starting place in the ski jumping World Cup for the first time . As 47th he missed the second round and thus the points clearly. Back in the World Cup, Kaltenböck was able to jump onto the podium again in Ruhpolding in March . A little later he started at the Ski Flying World Cup in Planica , but again missed the points.
As a result, Kaltenböck had to struggle with poor Continental Cup performances. There were no top 10 placements. At the Winter Universiade 2005 in Innsbruck and Seefeld in Tirol , he also only reached 30. Two weeks later, he jumped back into the top ten in Lauscha for the first time in two years and came in seventh. In Brotterode he even achieved a podium again as third. However, it was his final success for nearly a year. It wasn't until January 2006 that he jumped on the podium again and celebrated a victory and a second place in Titisee-Neustadt .
In February 2006 Kaltenböck received in Willingen again a starting place in a World Cup competition. He failed because of the points as 32nd only narrowly. In the 2006/07 season he succeeded in another Continental Cup victory in Sapporo , shortly after he unsuccessfully competed in a World Cup competition in Bischofshofen as part of the 2006/07 Four Hills Tournament . At the Winter Universiade 2007 in Turin five days later , he won gold in a team competition with Florian Liegl and Manuel Fettner . In the individual competitions he missed another medal, but was able to place in the top 10.
In September 2007 Kaltenböck started the Summer Grand Prix and achieved two top 10 placements in Hakuba . In Oberhof he was also the 18th to collect Grand Prix points. Thus he reached rank 27 in the overall standings. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Kaltenböck started as part of the A-squad in the Ski Jumping World Cup, but again failed to score points in Kuusamo , Trondheim and Villach . After returning to the Continental Cup and winning there in Kranj and Sapporo, he got the chance to start again in the World Cup. As 19th on the Kkurayama hill , Kaltenböck won his first World Cup points on February 2nd, 2008. However, they remained his only ones in his career. In the overall World Cup ranking of the season, he finished in 68th place. In the Continental Cup, the Austrian won again in Vancouver Trondheim and Vikersund . In the overall standings he achieved second place behind his compatriot Stefan Thurnbichler .
As a result, Kaltenböck was unable to build on this good performance. His last international jumping was when he took part in the Winter Universiade 2009 in Harbin . After winning the bronze medal in the individual on the normal hill, he won the silver medal with the team. He was fifth in the individual jumping on the large hill.
After the 2010 Winter Olympics, to which he only traveled as a substitute jumper for lack of success, Kaltenböck officially ended his active career because of an inflammation in his heel that had not healed.
During his active career, Kaltenböck was already involved in materials research and developed the stick binding for jump skis as early as 2007. However, their introduction was rejected by the association due to concerns about the rules. Only after the end of Kaltenböck's career did this invention catch on.
Nordic combination
Kaltenböck celebrated his only international appearance as a Nordic combined athlete at the Winter Universiade 2009, where he achieved fourth place in the team competition together with Matija Druml and Benjamin Kreiner .
