Manuel Fettner at the 2013 World Cup

Manuel Fettner (born June 17, 1985 in Vienna ) is an Austrian ski jumper . He jumps for SV Innsbruck-Bergisel .

Career

Fettner's talent was shown for the first time in the 1999/2000 season , in which he became Austrian runner-up and won two competitions in the Continental Cup . On January 4, 2001, Fettner made his debut in the World Cup at the Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck , where he was 44th. Only two days later, however, he already reached fifth place in the last competition of the tour. At the Junior World Championships in 2001 in Karpacz , Poland , he won the silver medal both individually and with the Austrian team.

Also in the Ski Jumping World Cup 2001/02 Fettner was launched and won 19 World Cup points. At the Junior World Championships in 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest , he was again second with the Austrian team and twelfth in the individual competition. While he was successful again in the Continental Cup in the 2002/03 season and even became junior world champion with the team for the first time in Sollefteå, Sweden (in individual he was sixth), he did not make the jump into the World Cup that winter. Even in the 2003/04 season, which was unsuccessful for him, he missed the start in the top class, to which he only returned in January 2005 at the last competition of the Four Hills Tournament in Bischofshofen .

In the ski jumping World Cup 2005/06 , Fettner again achieved world cup points, as well as in the season 2006/07 , in which he achieved a ninth place as the best result. After he got off to a good start in the winter of 2007/08 with a seventh and an eighth place, he subsequently missed further top 10 placements.

Fettner had won six Continental Cup competitions by the end of the 2009 season and made it onto the podium 23 times. He also triumphed once in the FIS Cup and twice with the team in the Summer Grand Prix , and he also won three times at the Universiade (2005 normal hill and large hill, 2007 team).

At the Four Hills Tournament 2010/11 he reached his first podium in third place at the opening competition in Oberstdorf on the Schattenbergschanze .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme, he won the gold medal with the team on the large hill. The Austrian team owed their victory - in addition to the good jumps - above all to the skiing skills of Manuel Fettner, who lost his right ski on landing and went on just one ski without having to reach into the snow to behind the fall line. Through this performance he managed to avoid significant point deductions that would have let the Austrian team fall back. In the individual competitions he was 15th (large hill) and 20th (normal hill).

In the 2013/14 season he won three more Continental Cups in Engelberg , Brotterode and Seefeld, as well as four more podium places. He also won the winter classification of the Continental Cup. In the following season , with a win in Rena, he only managed to place in the top three in the COC.

Fettner took part in the ski flying world championship 2016 in Tauplitz / Bad Mitterndorf . After finishing 25th in the individual, he won the bronze medal in the team competition together with Stefan Kraft , Manuel Poppinger and Michael Hayböck .

In October 2016, Fettner won the gold medal at the Austrian Championships 2016 in Eisenerz together with Andreas Kofler , Elias Tollinger and Clemens Aigner in the team competition. He also won gold twice in individual competitions, both on the normal hill and on the large hill.

The 2016/17 season was his most successful World Cup season to date. In November 2016 he reached third place in Ruka, his second podium of his career in an individual World Cup competition. He was able to confirm this result in January 2017 in Willingen with another third place. Due to his good performance, he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti . In the individual competitions he finished 12th on the normal hill and 18 on the large hill. In team jumping, he won the bronze medal with Michael Hayböck, Gregor Schlierenzauer and Stefan Kraft. On March 11, 2017, he won his first ever World Cup at the team competition in Oslo together with Michael Hayböck, Markus Schiffner and Stefan Kraft. At the end of the season he finished tenth in the overall World Cup, which was his best result up to that point.

In February 2018, at the age of 32, he first took part in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . He was part of the five-man squad of Austrian ski jumpers and took part in all three competitions . On the normal hill he finished 23rd, on the large hill he missed the final as 32nd and in the team competition on the large hill he was fourth together with Stefan Kraft, Gregor Schlierenzauer and Michael Hayböck.

At the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol , he was used in jumping on the large hill, which was held on the local Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck , and took 24th place.

In the 2019/20 season he ended the season prematurely after the 2019/20 Four Hills Tournament due to poor athletic performance; he had not yet reached a World Cup point.
