He made his first appearance at an international tournament in 1974 at the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf. Two years later he was part of the Norwegian squad at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and jumped from the normal hill to the 43rd place and from the large hill to the 26th place. On January 4th, 1978, he achieved his first victory in ski jumping on Innsbruck's Bergiselschanze . The ski jumping World Cup was held for the first time in the following season and Bergerud was part of the Norwegian national team from the start. At the Olympic Winter Games in 1980 Bergerud started again for Norway and jumped from the normal hill to 18th and from the large hill to 16th place.
In the following seasons, Bergerud celebrated a season win: 1980 he won in Vikersund , 1981 and 1983 in Engelberg . In the overall ranking of the Four Hills Tournament, a third place in 1981/82 , in the overall World Cup ranking, a fifth place in the 1982/83 season was his best placement.
Bergerud was also eight times Norwegian national champion; In 1979 he won the jumping on the Holmenkollbakken , and in 1985 he was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal , the highest award of the Norwegian Ski Association.
However, he was able to celebrate his greatest successes at world championships. In 1982 in Oslo he became team world champion with the Norwegian team, and in 1985 in Seefeld he won gold on the large hill and bronze on the normal hill.
After this, his most successful winter, he ended his sports career. Today he is chairman of the Proffice temporary employment agency , one of the largest employers in Scandinavia.
