Career

Thams was a deep sea sailor by trade.

At the first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix in 1924 , he won the gold medal in ski jumping. Since the Nordic World Ski Championships were held this year as part of the Olympic Games, he was also world champion with his Olympic victory. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1926 he was again world champion, in the same year he received the Holmenkollen Medal .

At the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , he could have repeated his 1924 victory. After the first jump he was in fifth place, in the second run he jumped the world record distance of 73 meters, but fell on landing and was only 28th because of the bad posture marks. Before that, Thams had complained to the Swiss jury that the The run-up was chosen too long and therefore mediocre jumpers would be given an advantage, but the good jumpers could reach dangerous distances.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics sailing competitions held in the Kiel Fjord , Thams won a silver medal as a team member in the Norwegian boat of the 8mR class Silja .
