Life

Adam Małysz began his sports career in Nordic combined . At the age of 15, Małysz, who completed an apprenticeship as a roofer , began his international ski jumping career. After his unexpected successes in 2001, he rose to become a folk hero in Poland, who was celebrated year after year, especially at the jumping in Zakopane . As a four-time individual world champion and four-time overall World Cup winner, Małysz is the most successful Polish winter sportsman to date.

From the 2006/07 season to the 2010/11 season Małysz was trained by the Finnish coach Hannu Lepistö . In contrast to the vast majority of his compatriots, Małysz is evangelical . He is married to Izabela and has one daughter, Karolina.

After the end of his career, Adam Małysz announced that he would be active as a rally driver in the future and that he was planning to start at the Dakar Rally . In fact, he has started there three times so far. In addition, he was the attaché for the Poles at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

At the beginning of May 2012 it was announced that Adam Małysz was running for a seat on the board of the International Ski Federation FIS .

successes

After initial successes in 1995 and 1996, Adam Małysz was a rather average ski jumper until he unexpectedly won the Four Hills Tournament by a large margin in the 2000/01 season . Since then he has belonged to the international elite. In the same season he was also able to win the Nordic Tournament and became world champion on the normal hill at the 2001 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti . He also won the overall World Cup.

He repeated his victory in the ski jumping World Cup in the following years in 2002 and 2003 , making him the first ski jumper in history to be the most constant ski jumper for three years in a row. At the 2003 World Cup in Val di Fiemme , Italy , he won both individual competitions.

A few changeable years followed without any major successes: In the 2003/04 season, Małysz could not win a single World Cup competition. A year later he again achieved four wins and fourth place overall. In 2005/06 he won the jumping on Holmenkollbakken in Oslo only at the end of the season .

In 2007, however, Małysz returned to the absolute top of the world and secured the world champion title on the normal hill in Sapporo at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 . He outclassed the competition by 22 points and is the record individual world champion with a total of four titles. In the second half of the season he was able to win nine World Cup competitions, including six of the last seven competitions, and was thus again and for the fourth time the overall World Cup winner. He also secured victory in the overall ski flying ranking, for which, however, due to the small number of competitions from the 2001/02 season to after the 2007/08 season, no crystal ball was awarded. In addition, Małysz won the Nordic Tour for the third time this year.

On March 3, 2011, after jumping from the large hill on Holmenkollbakken at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo, he announced the end of his ski jumping career. He completed his last official jump on March 20, 2011 on the ski flying hill in Planica . There he jumped 216 meters and reached third place.

On March 26, 2011, Małysz held his personal farewell competition in Zakopane . The entire world elite of ski jumping, numerous Polish celebrities and the then President Bronisław Komorowski were present at the event. Due to heavy snowfall, no competition could be held, however, besides Małysz, numerous jumpers left the hill without being scored.

His personal record is 230.5 meters.
