The Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is located on the Gudiberg , south of the Partenkirchen district, and is traditionally the venue for the New Year's jump of the Four Hills Tournament .
history
In 1921 the hill was the venue for the first New Year's ski jumping event. The hill has been named after it since it was used for ski jumping competitions at the 1936 Winter Olympics .
The Great Olympic Hill has been rebuilt several times in the course of its history. It was converted for the Olympic Winter Games in 1933 and 1934 and inaugurated on February 5, 1934 with a trial jumping. In front of 130,000 spectators, the Norwegian Birger Ruud became the Olympic champion in 1936 with widths of 75.0 meters and 74.5 meters. Today's Olympic Stadium was built for the 1940 Winter Olympics, which should also have taken place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
In 1950 a steel inrun tower was built. The new approach was 82 meters long, previously it was 70 meters. At the same time, the take-off was set back by about six meters. At that time, the renovated ski jump was one of the most modern in the world. In 1978 the ski jump was rebuilt again. The take-off table was set back and the K-point was thus extended. The last renovation took place in 1996 and cost around one million euros. The hill profile was adapted to the modern requirements of ski jumping and the K-point was extended to 115 meters. Since the hill was the oldest hill used in the World Cup at that time , jumpers and journalists gave it the affectionate nickname "the old lady".
In the winter of 1999, Toni Roßberger jumped with his Motocross - KTM the hill down which he had previously raised. During this jump he reached a world record for motorcycles with a width of 80 meters.
The jump of the skispinger Dieter Thoma (Germany) went down in history as the "Millennium Leap" on New Year's Eve 1999/2000 . On December 31, 1999 at 11:59:50 p.m., he jumped from the Great Olympic Hill to land on January 1, 2000 at 0:00 a.m. in the new millennium. With this jump Dieter Thoma finally ended his active career as a ski jumper.
New requirements in the FIS regulations made it necessary to build a new ski jumping facility in 2006. As part of an award-winning architecture competition, the architecture office terrain: loenhart & mayr, in cooperation with Mayr + Ludescher, Partner and Sieber + Renn Architects, was able to prevail against the international competition. As the highlight of the New Year's competition in 2007, Andreas Goldberger was supposed to do the last jump on the old hill, while the hill was symbolically blown up by fireworks. However, this jump did not take place due to the bad weather conditions, so it stayed with Anders Jacobsen , who made the last jump with his 122.5 meters in the first round.
On April 14, 2007, the old inrun tower and the referee tower were blown up to make way for new buildings. Among other things, the new hill should have a stylistically bolder, freely protruding modern inrun tower. The costs were estimated at eight to nine million euros, but ended up being 15 million euros. On April 26, 2007 the groundbreaking ceremony for the new ski jump took place. After extensive preparatory work, the new inrun tower, a steel structure weighing 650 tons, was erected on November 27th and 28th. On December 21, 2007 the hill was inaugurated as part of the Continental Cup. The young jumper Felix Schoft from Garmisch-Partenkirchen completed the maiden jump and achieved a distance of 132 meters. The Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer proved at the New Year's show in 2008, when he set the hill record of 141 meters, that the new hill can go beyond the 140 meter mark . However, this hill record was broken by Simon Ammann , who improved the hill record to 143.5 meters at the 2010 New Year's competition. The Norwegian Marius Lindvik set this hill record at the 2020 New Year's event .
Following demands from the International Ski Federation FIS, it was announced in April 2011 that a wind network would be installed for future events as part of the Four Hills Tournament.
Awards
In 2009 the Olympic ski jump Garmisch-Partenkirchen received the IOC / IAKS Award in gold, the only international architecture prize for sports and leisure facilities that have already been in operation (new buildings, extensions or modernizations).
