Johann "Hans" Millonig (born May 11, 1952 in Villach ) is a former Austrian ski jumper .
Career
Millonig, who started out as an alpine ski racer , started skiing in the 1960s at SV Achomitz , the ski club in the village of the same name in the municipality of Hohenthurn in the team newly built up by Franz Wiegele . In 1969 he was already Austrian youth champion in the youth class II. After training with the later Olympic champion Karl Schnabl , he was part of the Austrian squad for the first time at the 1970 Kongsberg Cup in St. Moritz . Together with his teammates, he celebrated his first victory on an international level. At the Four Hills Tournament 1970/71 he belonged to the national group in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen , but remained without any notable successes. In 1972 he won his first national championship title on the normal hill at the age of 19. In the 1972/73 season he was third on the three-country tour. A year later he was 49th in the Four Hills Tournament 1973/74 .
From autumn 1974 Millonig trained together with his teammates for the first time according to Baldur Preiml's new training methods . In the following Four Hills Tournament in 1974/75 he achieved his best individual result on the tour with third place in the New Year's competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In the end it was enough for 13th place in the tour's overall ranking. For the 1976 Winter Olympics , Millonig narrowly missed the qualification due to the high performance density. Although he won the international jumping of Štrbské Pleso a year later , he was also missing in the squad for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1978 in Lahti . In the 1978/79 season the Carinthian was able to increase his performance again significantly and reached 25th place overall in the 1978/79 Four Hills Tournament and fourth in the three-country tour. He also secured silver at the Austrian Championships on the normal hill.
At the end of 1979 Millonig was accepted into the senior national squad for the World Cup and jumped the first competition on December 27, 1979 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy . He surprisingly finished the jumping on 6th place. He last achieved such a high ranking in 1975. At the Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 he could not convince and usually only ended up in the middle of the field on the lower ranks. At the first World Cup after the tour in Sapporo , Japan , he was able to jump back into the top 10 with seventh place. He was able to repeat this result in Thunder Bay , Canada . At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , Millonig jumped to 25th place on the large hill.
On March 21, 1980 he won his first competition in Planica and was also on the podium the next day on the large hill as third. Three days after this success he finished second in Štrbské Pleso and was on the podium for the last time in his career. After the Four Hills Tournament in 1980/81 went just as badly as the year before, he ended his active jumping career a little later at the age of 29.
Millonig celebrated three international victories in total, finished second 12 times and was third four times. Overall, he jumped 45 times among the top ten.
