Franz Wiegele (born November 23, 1965 in Villach ) is a former Austrian ski jumper .

Career

On January 4th 1983 Wiegele made his debut in the ski jumping world cup . When jumping from the large hill in Innsbruck he reached the 34th place. On March 12, 1983 Wiegele won the gold medal on the normal hill at the Junior World Championships in Kuopio . At the start of the 1983/84 World Cup season , he scored his first World Cup points on December 30, 1983 in Oberstdorf with 12th place. In January he was able to further improve his performance and reached fifth place in Sapporo . So he jumped into the top ten in a World Cup competition for the first time. A year later, on March 10, 1985, he stood on the podium for the first time and for the last time in his career in Oslo and reached 2nd place on the large hill. In the following three years he was able to achieve World Cup points and places in the top ten several times. In the 1987/88 season he achieved his best placement at the end of 18th place in the overall World Cup ranking. Before that, he had already landed 5th in the overall ranking of the Four Hills Tournament in 1987/88 . Subsequently, however, there were no great successes. From 1991 he started in parallel in the Continental Cup , but could not achieve any top placements there either. After three unsuccessful seasons, Wiegele ended his active ski jumping career in 1994.
