The company is led by ( CEO ) Tom Quinlan. The company was founded in 1864 under the company name RR Donnelley & Sons by Richard Robert Donnelley, whose son Reuben H. Donnelley continued the publishing house. The cartography division was spun off into an independent company Geosystems in the late 1980s ; Geoysystems later became MapQuest , which belongs to the US company Time Warner . RR Donnelley acquired various companies in the 1990s and 2000s . In February 2004 the company merged with Moore Wallace Incorporation . In 2007, the Indian company OfficeTiger and the publisher Banta Corporation were acquired.

RR Donnelley operates its own logistics division for the national and international dispatch of mail and goods.

In 2015, they acquired Dover Publications when they acquired Courier Corporation for $ 261 million .
