MapQuest was founded in 1967 as the cartography division of the US publisher RR Donnelley & Sons . After the spin-off in 1994 as GeoSystems Global Corporation , the website mapquest.com started on February 5, 1996. In 1999, the company was renamed MapQuest, Inc. One year later, MapQuest was bought by AOL and developed into one of the leading online map services worldwide.
