David Hirschfelder

David Hirschfelder (born November 18, 1960 in Ballarat , Victoria ) is an Australian musician and composer of film scores . In 1997 and 1999 he was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best film music .

Life

David Hirschfelder grew up in Ballarat near Melbourne . He learned to play the piano at the age of four. He later moved to Melbourne, where he founded the jazz band Pyramid , with whom he performed at the 1983 Montreux Jazz Festival . From 1983 to 1986 he was keyboardist in the successful Australian rock band Little River Band and worked with singer John Farnham .

At the end of the 1980s, Hirschfelder, who had meanwhile become one of the most successful musicians in Australia, decided to devote himself to film music in the future . His work on the documentary Suzy's Story earned him the 1987 Penguin Award . For Strictly Ballroom from 1992, Hirschfelder received the BAFTA Award in the category of best film music . In 1997, nominations for Shine - The Path into Light for Best Film Music at the Oscars and the Golden Globe Awards followed .

For the film Elizabeth he hired a 90-piece orchestra and a 40-piece choir in 1998. His efforts were rewarded in 1999 with another Oscar nomination and awards with a BAFTA and an APRA award . He also received an APRA award from the Australian Performing Right Association for the score for Better than Sex .

In 2000, Hirschfelder wrote the music for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sydney. In 2008 he received a Satellite Awards nomination for the film Australia .

His numerous projects also include soundtracks for films such as The Truman Show (1998) and Elizabeth - The Golden Kingdom (2007).
