action

Inseparable friends Claire and Hailey lie in the sun and watch the lifeguard Raymond, who is flirting with another named Cecilia. Both are in love with Raymond, who ignores them. The following night, a violent storm raged and the two prayed and wished they didn't have to split up, as Hailey's mother has accepted a job in Australia and plans to move there with her daughter soon.

The next day, Claire falls into a pool filled with sea water and sees something underwater that she cannot classify. Raymond saves them. She tells Hailey what she saw underwater. She doesn't believe this at first, but secretly goes to the pool with Claire that night to get to the bottom of the matter. The mermaid Aquamarine, which was washed into the pool by the storm, swims in the pool. Mermaids, the friends experience, have legs on land - they only grow fins again at night and when they come into contact with water. Aquamarine is on the run from a forced marriage that her father arranged for her - with a groom whom she contemptuously calls "sea cucumber". She can only escape this wedding if she proves to her father that there is true love, which the sea people consider a myth.

Aquamarine asks the friends for help with their advertising attempts for Raymond. She makes him kiss her and makes him promise to wait for her. In return, Aquamarine grants Claire and Hailey the fulfillment of a wish that they save for later. In the end, Claire and Hailey walk along the beach together.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on reelviews that the film is recommended for young girls and the unhappy parents who have to accompany them to the cinema. He estimated 90% of viewers would be girls ages 8-14. For the owners of chromosome Y, wrote Berardinelli, the film is "not particularly interesting". He compared Sara Paxton to Reese Witherspoon in her younger years.

Roger Ebert saw “a terribly sweet film” . In his opinion, the plot is completely predictable, the emotions plain and simple. He is sure that this film will have an audience, but also that he is not one of them.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "a conventional teenage comedy without any particular staging finesse, which at best stands out due to the maturation process of the characters, which is not a matter of course for this subject."

Ruth Steinhof wrote in the BZ : "Sometimes you want to look away from being so embarrassed." However, she admits that the end may not be completely superficial after all.
