action

Two possible developments in the life of London PR specialist Helen Quilley are simulated. She is released for borrowing four bottles of alcohol from the office kitchen. Quilley says that her testosterone- oriented colleagues have wanted to get rid of her for a long time . In the elevator she loses an earring that James Hammerton picks up. He is impressed with her. Helen wants to take the subway home. At one station the film is divided into two alternative courses of action that run in parallel and are constantly cut against each other.

In the first version of the plot, Helen misses the subway, in the second she reaches the train in time. In this version of the plot, she sits on the subway next to Hammerton, who speaks to her. His flow of speech annoys her at first, then she calms down and apologizes to him. At home she discovers her boyfriend Gerry in bed with Lydia, his ex-girlfriend. She finds accommodation with her friend Anna, James becomes her boyfriend. Helen - as a symbol of the new beginning - has her hair cut and dyed blonde and starts a new life as an independent PR consultant.

In the first version of the plot, however, Helen suspects her boyfriend of infidelity because she finds two glasses in her apartment. She stays with him despite this assumption, even as their relationship becomes increasingly bleak. Helen works on two catering jobs in a row, while Gerry is writing a book but still meets with Lydia. Lydia, who wants to live with Gerry, puts pressure on her lover. She tells him that as a woman she will never say what she wants, but that she reserves the right to become very uncomfortable if she doesn't get what she wants.

In the second version, Helen becomes pregnant by James. She sees him in front of a hospital with a woman and learns that he is married. Helen, disappointed, wants to part with James, but he finds her after an intensive search. He explains that he has been separated from his wife for months. As a good person, she merely consented to pretend a functioning marriage and to visit his seriously ill mother in the hospital with him. A few minutes later, a traffic accident occurs and Helen dies in the hospital.

In the first version too, Helen becomes pregnant - from Gerry. She is supposed to visit a manager who she wants to hire. The manager is Lydia, who at the same time calls Gerry to tell him that she is pregnant by him. Helen sees her boyfriend and through this finds out about his affair. She runs away and falls down the stairs. She survived the accident but miscarried. She separates from Gerry, who claims to do anything for her and who she asks to leave the hospital room. On leaving the hospital, Helen meets James Hammerton, who had visited his mother, and is visibly impressed.
