Thank You ( English for "Thank you") is a song by the British pop singer Dido from 1998, which gained greater fame in 2000 through a sample in Stan ( Eminem feat. Dido). The piece was released as the third single from their debut album No Angel .

Creation and artwork

Thank You was written jointly by Dido Armstrong and London-based songwriter and music producer Paul Philip Herman. The piece was produced by Dido himself, together with her brother Rollo Armstrong . The latter was also responsible for programming. The mixing took place under the direction of the British Phill Brown. The American Tom Coyne did the mastering. The song was recorded together by Goetz Botzenhardt and Dido. For the instrumentation , Mark Bates on keyboard and piano, Herman on guitar and Mal Hyde-Smith on percussions were hired. The recordings and production work took place in the London Church Studios and in the Deep Dish Studios in Maryland .

On the front cover of the single you can only see the face of Dido - next to the artist name and song title. The photography is by British photographer Simon Emmett, the cover artwork by Richard Andrews, who is also from Great Britain. On an alternative cover picture for the first promo single in the United States, only the face of Dido can be seen, but this picture is kept in darker tones, while that for the official single is in light tones. The photograph for this comes from the American photographer Frank Ockenfels, the artwork by Jeff Schulz.

Music video

The music video for Thank You celebrated its premiere in the United States in January 2001. The video shows Dido, who has to vacate her small house in the midst of many skyscrapers and approve it for demolition due to unpaid bills. At first she receives a visit from officials who want to hand over the eviction notice, but Dido does not open it to them. Shortly afterwards, they reappear with a demolition and evacuation team and forcibly open the front door. While the house is being cleared, Dido appears unimpressed or ignores the people around her. She gets dressed in peace, has another tea and looks out the window. In the end, the officers led her out of the apartment against her will. She stands in the middle of her furniture while she watches the demolition. The video ends with Dido leaving the place alone with a shoulder bag , an umbrella and a hairdryer . The total length of the video is 3:13 minutes. Directed by the American director Dave Meyers . To date, the video has over 173 million views on YouTube (as of February 2020).

Cover versions and samples

Eminem feat. Dido

The song Stan by the American rapper Eminem is based on a sample by Thank You or the chorus is based on it. The first stanza of Thank You forms the refrain for Stan . Eminem recorded the piece with Dido, who only sings her original parts in the chorus, while Eminem raps newly texted stanzas. In terms of content, the song is about a fanatical, obsessive and overzealous follower . The stanzas are presented by Eminem in letter form and describe the fictitious correspondence between him and a fan he is obsessed with . The piece first appeared on Eminem's third studio album The Marshall Mathers LP on May 19, 2000, later Stan was released as the third single from the album on November 20, 2000. In the accompanying music video, Dido plays the pregnant friend of the protagonist “Stan”. The role of Stan took on the Canadian actor Devon Sawa . In terms of content, the video mainly focuses on the visual implementation of the content of the song. The total length of the uncensored video is around six minutes, that of the uncensored version over eight minutes. Directed by Philip G. Atwell and Dr. Dre . To date, the video has over 82 million views on YouTube (as of February 2020).

The single reached the top of the charts in Germany (1 week), Austria (3 weeks), Switzerland (7 weeks) and the United Kingdom (1 week). The music video won a MuchMusic Video Award. 17 years after its actual publication, the word "Stan" was added to the English-language Oxford dictionary . The following sentence serves as an explanation: "'Stan' is a noun and describes an obsessive and overzealous fan of a celebrity."

"My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why I
got out of bed at all,
the morning rain clouds up my window,
and I can't see at all,
and even if I could it'll all be gray,
put yours picture on my wall,
it reminds me, that it's not so bad.
It's not so bad. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

“My tea has gotten cold. I wonder why I got
out of bed in the first place.
The morning rain clouds my window
and I cannot see at all;
And even if I could, everything would be gray
Hang your picture on my wall,
it reminds me that it isn't that bad.
It's not so bad."

In 2020 the German DJ Felix Jaehn and the German DJ duo VIZE released a cover version of Thank You entitled Thank You [Not So Bad] . Like Stan , the piece takes up the first verse of Thank You . The song consists only of this one verse, which is repeated a total of six times. Nothing was changed in the composition or the lyrics, so Dido and Herman are still the only authors of the piece. Jaehn himself sees the piece as a kind of “thank you” for his fans who have supported him for the past five years since his breakthrough with cheerleaders . The single was produced by Jaehn and VIZE member Vitali Zestovskih , and Mark Becker was at their side as additional producer. Both were also responsible for the instrumentation, in the form of keyboards . Together with the Austrian sound engineer Nikodem Milewski , they also programmed the song. Milewski was also responsible for the mastering. Jaehn and VIZE are only involved in the production work, the vocals come from the German singer Leonie Burger.
