Before starting her solo career, Dido was part of the band Faithless together with her brother Rollo Armstrong . The solo debut did not initially attract much attention. It was not until Eminem used parts of the song Thank You in his international rap hit, Stan , in 2000 , that sales increased and worldwide recognition. The album, which was released in the USA in 1999, subsequently went platinum there before it was also released in Europe in 2001. In total, the album sold over 21 million times.
The New Rolling Stone Album Guide described the album as surprisingly sounding ripe for a debut. It is characterized by refined, catchy dream pop songs with trip-hop undertones. For AllMusic , Jeff Burger found that the vocals on the album were very reminiscent of Sinéad O'Connor , but that the songs as a whole, in contrast to O'Connor, were less adventurous, but were originally supplemented by electronic music. The lyrics would focus almost exclusively on love, lust and relationships, but the fact remains that it is a promising and highly audible album, which is atmospheric, seductive, beautifully produced and sequenced. Beth Johnson, on the other hand, felt more reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan for Entertainment Weekly . However, the album would create a nice sonic intimacy.
Natalie Shaw called the album for the BBC not very varied or constructed. A passive-aggressive protagonist would blandly whimper at someone who doesn't really listen. The hoped-for action and movement would not come about, instead one would be bathed in synthesized standstill. Folk-Pop is the basic structure of the music, in which electronic beats are occasionally incorporated in order to emphasize the fleeting manic depression of the content. Joachim Gauger wrote for Laut.de that Dido combines “her extraordinary voice with great songwriting and well thought-out beats. The result is soulful ballads, occasionally accompanied by trip-hop beats that are reminiscent of Portishead. ”For Christian Ward from the New Musical Express, the album shows that Dido is a musician for people who only buy one CD a year. The album is ridiculously banal.
