The album received mostly positive reviews. Metacritic gave it a score of 74/100 based on 14 reviews. Of these, five were mixed and nine were positive.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic praised the album as a little less calm than the two previous albums. He described the songs as more subtle and rich, but also deeper and more complex. The album is powerful and calming with melancholy features. Stephanie Merritt from the Observer described the album as strongly influenced by the death of Dido's father. However, it is not gloomy, but more thoughtful and serious. Entertainment Weekly's Chris Willman also praised the album. Dido seems a bit reserved, but this is just right for a series of cool songs that are about feeling distant. Willie von Sputnikmusic described the album as good and particularly sounded out the more personal and adult note.

Guardian critic Maddy Costa attested the album an atmosphere of desolation and fragility. The main problem she named Dido's low voice, which lacks expressiveness. Slant's Sal Cinquemanicalled the album the least adventurous Dido album. Still, the songs remain timeless and her voice is as smooth as ever. PopMatters' David Smiththought the album was less than good, but also found good sides. In this way, pain as a recurring theme can also be heard in her voice and gives her a new maturity.
