Citizen Cope is the stage name of Clarence Greenwood (born May 20, 1968 in Memphis (Tennessee) ), an American singer. His music is a mix of blues , soul , folk and rock . He has been writing songs since 1993, which he is currently recording under his own label, Rainwater Recordings. He founded this in 2010 after he decided to stop working with other major music companies including Capitol , Arista , Dreamworks and RCA .

childhood

Clarence Greenwood was born in Memphis, but spent parts of his childhood in Texas and Mississippi . Eventually he moved to Washington, DC , where he mainly grew up.

Career

He released the first album in 1992 in a limited number of 500 copies. He called it Cope Citizen . He later took the place as a DJ for the hip-hop group Basehead in Washington DC. In 1997 he signed a contract with Capitol Records. In 2000 Citizen Cope started producing at Dreamworks. Two years later he released the album Citizen Cope . Rolling Stone magazine wrote: "... Cope melds hip-hop with folk, soul and blues ... and 'feels' this combination deeply .... Cope's uncommon chords and harmonies combine delicate dissonance with unexpected flashes of beauty .. . "- ( ... Cope fuses hip-hop with folk, soul and blues, and" feels "that combination strongly. His unusual music combines inconsistency with unexpected moments of beauty .) According to the Washington Post , Let The Drummer Kick deserves gold . Shortly thereafter, Arista demanded that Greenwood buy himself out of his DreamWorks contract. In 2004 he released the album The Clarence Greenwood Recordings , which he also produced himself and on which Carlos Santana has a guest appearance on the song Son's Gonna Rise . This also received a positive rating from various music magazines. Every Waking Moment followed in 2006 and ranked 69th on the Billboard 200 Top Albums Sales List. In 2010, Greenwood decided to run its own production company. He called them "Rainwater Recordings". This step enabled him to make independent decisions about his music and career. In the same year he released The Rainwater LP .
