Bounty Killer (* 12. June 1972 in Kingston , Jamaica as Rodney Basil Price ) is a Jamaican dancehall - Deejay .

biography

Since his first single released in 1992 ("Coppershot") on the Jamaican label King Jammy’s , the artist - also known as "Warlord" due to his clash quality - has developed into one of the most successful and formative representatives of modern dancehall .

Through collaborations with well-known US rappers such as the group The Fugees , he also gained increasing international fame from the mid- 1990s . He also did a feature with the group No Doubt in 2002 on the hit track "Hey Baby". In Jamaica, he attracted attention mainly through the lyrical and physical exchange of blows with competitor Beenie Man . At the beginning of August 2010, the conflict between Beenie Man and Bounty Killer was publicly declared over when they surprised the audience with a joint appearance at the “Guinness Summer Eclipse”.

In the past few years, Bounty Killer tried to promote and support new young dancehall talents. This includes artists like Mavado , Busy Signal or Vybz Kartel .

Homophobia

Bounty Killer repeatedly caused a stir because of homophobic texts, so-called Battyman tunes , which call for murder. It is often claimed that the texts have been misinterpreted and mistranslated from the Jamaican patois . Even the critics do not deny that it is partly a matter of “gross showing off and verbal tail comparison”, but oppose that the verbal focus of hatred on a minority in its functionality alone represents “group-related misanthropy”. In 2003, a gig by Bounty Killer in London was canceled after protests by gay organizations with reference to homophobic lyrics of his songs. In the summer of 2004, Bounty Killer was unloaded by the organizers of the Belgian Krakrock Festival, as “hateful” artists were not welcome. In 2008 the organizer of Bounty Killer planned to give three concerts in Essen, Berlin and Munich. After violent protests, including by the Lesbian and Gay Association Germany , the concerts in Berlin and Essen were canceled. From 2008 he was advertised by the federal government in the Schengen information system for rejection at the border. After a criminal complaint from the ranks of the German Bundestag, the responsible public prosecutor's office investigated the singer. As a result, the CDs The Fifth Element and Next Millennium were indexed in Germany . On April 23, 2012, Volker Beck from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen called for an entry and performance ban for bounty killers and comparable musicians.

Arrests

Price was arrested but not convicted twice during Jamaica's annual reggae sumfest . In 2001 he was arrested after a physical altercation with another artist after a concert.

In June 2006 Price was charged with assaulting the mother of his child. According to the Jamaica Star newspaper , he was said to have slapped her face several times and hit her head against a wall. He placed $ 20,000 in bail. In February 2009, Bounty Killer was arrested again after he ran over seven red lights in Kingston , Jamaica, according to police reports. He refused a subsequent alcohol test as well as a fine.
