Vybz Kartel
Vybz Kartel (real name Adidja Palmer ; born January 7, 1976 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a dancehall artist from Jamaica. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 2014.
life and career
He grew up in Portmore . He attended Calabar High School but was released. Nevertheless, he continued his education at a technical university. Since his uncle was a DJ, he came into contact with music early on. At that time he mainly listened to Country & Western , Sam Cooke and Ninjaman . He was mainly inspired by Bounty Killer , Charlie Chaplin , Papa San , Buju Banton , Will Smith and KRS-One . At the age of ten he already began to write his own lyrics, which he also presented in a talent show called Gong . At twelve he already recorded his debut single Fat Woman , which was not a great success.
In 1996 he founded a group called Vybz Cartel. Drugs , however, caused this band to break up quickly. However, Adidja Palmer decided to keep the name, but replaced the C with a K, so that his current name Vybz Kartel arose.
The following musicians played on his debut album (2003): Donovan "Vendetta" Bennett, Shiah Coore, Paul "Teetimus" Edmund, Craig "Leftside" Parkes, Trevor "Baby G" James Jnr, Daniel "Blaxxx" Lewis, Steven " Lenky "Marsden, Nigel Staff, Sly Dunbar," Computer "Paul Henton, Alberto" Burro "Blackwood, Mario Campbell, Delano Thomas and Andre Saunders. The producer was Donovan "Vendetta" Bennett of Don Corleon Records.
Sentenced to life imprisonment
He was arrested on October 1, 2011, for possession of marijuana in Kingston, and has since been detained on pending proceedings for two murders in which he was accused of involvement and later convicted.
On March 13, 2014, Jamaican media reported that an attempt was made to bribe some of the jurors with $ 500,000 in Jamaica to obtain an acquittal in the ongoing murder trial in which Palmer was charged with three other men .
On April 3, 2014, Palmer was sentenced to life imprisonment by the judge after the jury had already found him guilty on March 13 by 10 to 1 votes. According to the verdict, a release on parole is possible after 35 years in prison at the earliest. The defense announced that it would go into revision .
On April 3, 2020, a three-person jury from the Jamaican Court of Appeals rejected Kartel's objection. They still gave him seven days to submit paperwork to reduce his sentence. As a result, on April 17, 2020, his sentence was reduced to 32 years and 6 months, taking into account that he was now granted probation. This means that Kartel can only be released on parole in 2046 at the earliest. The appeal relates to Judge Campell's failure to include the time in pre-trial detention in the sentence.
