Ninjaman , real name Desmond John Ballentine (born January 20, 1966 in Saint Mary ) is a Jamaican dancehall singer who was particularly successful in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His hits include Murder Dem , Cover Me (with Tinga Stewart ) and Protection . He is also known under the name "Don Gorgon" or "Brother Desmond".

Ninjaman is less known for his records than for his live performances. At the Sting Festival , he appeared regularly as a rival to Shabba Ranks and Supercat .

Life

At the age of twelve, Ninjaman started working as a deejay on the Black Culture Soundsystem under the name Double Ugly . In 1980 he switched to the Killamanjaro sound system, where Supercat became his mentor. He recorded his first single under the name Uglyman . He later changed his stage name to Ninjaman. In 1988 he had his first hit with Protection . Since then, Ninjaman has worked with Junior Reid , Henry "Junjo" Lawes , Bobby Digital , Courtney Melody , King Jammy , Bounty Killer and Sizzla , among others . Ninjaman now also has its own label, Ninja Corporation .

In 1993 there were strong reviews for his so-called gun lyrics and lyrics that glorify violence. Which resulted in a decline in its concerts and record sales outside of Jamaica.

In 1997 Ninjaman temporarily changed its name to Brother Desmond and produced gospel reggae songs during that time.

In March 2009, Ninjaman was arrested and charged with a murder on Marl Road in Tower Hill, Saint Andrew Parish, Jamaica. In late April 2010, Ninjaman was remanded in custody with his son Janile, Dennis Clayton and Seymour Samuels for failing to appear for a hearing at the Home Circuit Court in Kingston, Jamaica. The trial was a murder of 20-year-old Robert Johnson in Tower Hill, Saint Andrew Parish, Jamaica in 2009. According to a police report, the four men drove to Johnson's house on Marl Road and fired several shots . Ninjaman was released on bail of J $ 2,000,000 in March 2012 and is due to appear in court on July 15, 2012.

Ninjaman is also active as an actor. He starred in the films Third World Cop (1999) and Rude Boy: The Jamaican Don (2003). He has been serving a 25-year prison sentence for murder since December 2017.
