Sizzla Kalonji (actually Miguel Orlando Collins ; born April 17, 1976 in Saint Mary in northeastern Jamaica ) is a reggae and dancehall performer .

Life

Private

Miguel Orlando Collins was born in August Town, Kingston, in 1976. He grew up in the ghettos of Saint Mary Parish in northeastern Jamaica, where he came into contact with reggae and dancehall culture. Collins showed an early interest in technology and electronics and worked as a technician on various sound systems . He began training as a mechatronics technician , but did not finish it. Miguel Collins is the second born of six children. His parents were devout Rastafarians . Collins himself also accepted his parents' religion. In the mid-1990s, he then joined the Bobo Ashanti movement, a Rastafarian group based on the Rasta saint Prince Emmanuel Charles Edwards. Edwards is regarded by this movement as the priest of the Most High God. Other Bobo Ashanti reggae performers include Anthony B. and Capleton . His music and lyrics got more and more influences from this fragmented culture. at. In early 2000, Sizzla studied architecture at the University of Technology of Jamaica in Saint Andrew .

Career

Sizzla live 2007

He began his musical career as a solo artist with a number of singles that were never released . He was mainly influenced by the music of Buju Banton , who initiated the first musical tightening of reggae music with his album "Til Shiloh" (1995), and by Shabba Ranks . For these two artists he also appeared in the opening act. He went on tour with the reggae artist Luciano and was finally discovered by the saxophonist Dean Fraser . He was working with the Caveman Hi-Fi sound system when he met Bobby Dixon , known as Bobby Digital. In the mid-1990s he signed a record deal with the Xterminator Records label, but then switched to Digital B.

His first album was released in 1995 under the name "Burning Up", but was still quite unsuccessful. In 1995 he published the title "No White God", which finally made him famous. His international breakthrough came with the number 1 album "Black Woman & Child" (1997) with Bobby Digital. Since that time he has released several albums a year, distributed across various record companies. At the end of the 1990s he published so-called "slack tunes", pornographic songs that explicitly address the gender aspect, and thus aroused the discontent of reggae culture.

During his student days from 2000 he was admonished by senior Bobo Ashanti because of his so-called Slack-Liriks (texts that glorify violence and contain sexual content). After that, he withdrew lyrically in order not to disappoint the insecure fans. He changed the direction of his music. The sexual aspect was dropped, instead he wrote socially critical and “positive texts”, which in some places continued to call for violence and glorified the use of firearms, but in a different context.

In March 2005, his home was searched by British and Jamaican police forces as part of Operation King Fish. Automatic weapons were found in his apartment ; Sizzla and 30 of his followers were arrested, and he himself was charged with masterminding a criminal organization called the Judgment Yard, allegations that were later dropped. "Judgment Yard" is dubbed by him as a "family" made up of loyal friends.

Controversy over homophobic lyrics and utterances

Sizzla has so-called Battyman tunes in his song repertoire , in which derogatory expressions are used for homosexual men and in some cases openly calling for violence against them. Some of Sizzla's texts were classified in Germany by the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People as glorifying violence and harmful to young people, which is why the two Sizzla albums Rastafari and Kings of Dancehall were indexed in 2009 . In Pump Up Her Pum Pum states, inter alia: Shot Battybwoy My Big Gun Boom !!! English: Shoot the ass boy [gay], [you] my big gun, boom !!!

In a press conference after the Summerjam Festival 2007 in Cologne, he said: “If you go to other men, you drag [your mother's reputation] in the dirt. A man has to decide whether he wants to be a piece of dirt or a proud man. [...] "

In an interview in the Riddim 01/08 Sizzla explains: “Even if we sing, kill Battyman, then we don't go out and kill people. This is not a call to violence. [...] We can [but] not accept that little boys are raped, nor that underage girls are abused. "

As part of the Stop the Murder Music campaign , attempts were made to prevent Sizzla from appearing.

However, in 2007 he signed the Reggae Compassionate Act (RCA for short) , in which he stipulates "respect for those who think differently as the basis for his work". According to information from the LSVD , however, Sizzla still had the criticized texts in the program after signing it on his European tour in 2007 and in Jamaica, whereby he sometimes had the audience sing the incriminated text parts. Later he even repeatedly denied signing it. The agency "contour-music", which had organized Sizzla concerts in Germany in the past, announced in 2010 that it would no longer represent the singer.

Based on Sizzla's remarks and reports from the German embassy in Jamaica, the Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of the Interior managed to have the artist advertised in the Schengen information system for rejection or non-entry into the Schengen area. Therefore he was not allowed to perform in the European Union for a while. However, the entry ban was not extended after 2008. Despite the tender that still existed at the time, Sizzla managed to travel to Austria and give a concert there on May 12, 2008 at “Planet Music”. During an appearance planned in Spain, Sizzla was immediately arrested at Madrid Airport and sent back.

In 2009 and 2010, some concerts in Germany, including participation in the Chiemsee Reggae Summer 2010 , were canceled due to public pressure, as the organizer had security concerns about announced demonstrations by left-wing groups. Other concerts took place despite a few strong protests, elsewhere less or completely without protests.

In 2013, Sizzla was warned several times by the organization before his appearance at the Sting Festival in Portmore , Jamaica , where he has been one of the main acts for years, to perform homophobic songs during the performance. After publicly speaking on stage, he was banned from appearing at the event for life.
