murder music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Murder music ( " murder music " in Germany also common " hate music ") is a by British activist Peter Tatchell mid-1990s coined term to certain homophobic works mainly Jamaican musicians, primarily from the dancehall - and reggae area , the to call for violence and murder against gays. Compared to right-wing rock or RAC , these styles of music have a relatively broad audience, also politically left-wing and liberal, because of the otherwise predominant themes, and the artists concerned were able to perform without any problems. The slang expressions used for homosexuals were not known to many people outside Jamaica, nor was the highly homophobic culture in Jamaica .

Artists and reactions

The British organization Outrage , LSVD and Human Rights Watch accused Beenie Man , Elephant Man , Sizzla , Bounty Killer , Vybz Kartel , Capleton , TOK , Buju Banton and others of promoting homophobia.

As part of the campaign against murder music or hate music, u. a. Artists like Eminem ; criticized rappers like Bushido in Germany . In 2007, the Berlin public prosecutor brought charges against “Boss A” and the former aggro Berlin rapper G-Hot for producing and publishing the homophobic and seditious song “Keine Toleranz”. The G-Hot label, whose contract there expired in 2006, then ended any collaboration and also excluded future joint projects.

As a justification, the artists often claim that these texts should not be taken literally and that they are not a call to burn people or things. “Fire” does not mean a real fire, but a spiritual fire that purifies the soul; a concept that also occurs in biblical texts. Bounty Killer and Sizzla were advertised in 2008 on the initiative of the LSVD and Volker Beck from the Federal Ministry of the Interior in the Schengen information system for rejection at the borders. At the end of August 2008, some Jamaican CDs by Elephant Man were indexed in Germany because they were harmful to young people.

Reggae Compassionate Act

Several reggae stars, including Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton, signed the Reggae Compassionate Act in 2007 in London , an agreement with the initiators of the “Stop Murder Music” campaign. They committed themselves to refrain from any anti-gay lyrics in their songs in the future. In 2008, Beenie Man also signed an agreement that applies to Germany, the Reggae Compassionate Act II, according to the Kesselhaus in der Kulturbrauerei . The LSVD praised this as a “first step in the right direction”.

Stop Murder Music in Switzerland

On March 14th, 2008 the Dancehall Unity Vol. III took place. The party was organized by the Culture Factory (CF) collective, one of three reggae dancehall platforms active in the Reithalle Bern cultural center . When the MC of the Zurich sound system Dubversive Soundsystem loudly sang a Battyman tune , the CF organizers confronted him and finally asked the entire sound system to leave the event. This was followed by negative comments, including homophobic ones, from a minority of guests. In the internal discussion of the CF and with friends, it came to the conclusion that this topic still needs a lot of educational work.

This was the trigger to start Stop Murder Music Bern in April 2008 . In contrast to some gay and lesbian NGOs and organizers, they see the boycott and isolation of the respective artists as the better strategy. The distancing from homophobia and calls for violence against gays and lesbians by organizers who allow such artists to appear in the appropriate contractual agreements leaves them feeling uncomfortable. They compare the logic with a temporary contractual “ denazification ” of right-wing rock bands for concert tours across Europe. With their project they want to ensure that gay and lesbian hostile musicians in Bern and the rest of Switzerland have a hard time finding opportunities to perform, just like sound systems that put on Battyman tunes or even sing along. This is to be achieved by as many venues, sound systems, DJs and interested parties as possible supporting their manifesto and allowing the contents of the manifest, including any sanctions, to become part of their contractual conditions. In addition, information on homophobic tendencies should be made available to a broad public.

The expulsion from the capital region caused an increase in appearances in northeastern Switzerland. The EU entry ban for some artists does not apply to Switzerland either. In July 2009, Stop Murder Music Zurich was founded in the same way by the gay SP politician Roland Munz together with three heterosexual friends.
