Beenie Man (* 22. August 1973 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is the stage name of Anthony Moses Davis , one of the more popular dancehall - deejays in Jamaica.

Career

By his own admission, Beenie Man started playing records at the age of six. His career began at the age of eight when he won first place in the national Tastee Talent Contest in 1981 , was discovered there by the producer Junjo Lawes and subsequently released his debut single Too Fancy . 1983 recordings with Dillinger and Fathead were made, and his debut album The Invincible Beenie Man with the hit single Over the Sea was on the market. After that, the child star devoted himself exclusively to school again, apart from the occasional singles.

It was not until 1993 that a new album, Cool Cool Rider , by Beenie Man, who had grown up in the meantime, was released, but initially went largely unnoticed. With the following albums the steep rise in Jamaica began, Beenie Man developed into one of the most important singers in dancehall reggae . Beenie Man's international breakthrough came in 1997 in Great Britain with the single Dancehall Queen . The following single Who Am I from the album Many Moods Of Moses made it into the UK Top 10. With the album, he achieved his first Grammy nomination in the category for best reggae album . After further success he was signed to Virgin Records in the USA in 2000 . Art & Life , the first release with the new record company, brought him the first Grammy in 2001.

The single Girls Dem Sugar from this album was released as a joint production with R'n'B singer Mýa . Joint singles with international musical greats such as Wyclef Jean , Janet Jackson and others followed. In Jamaica, Beenie Man worked with countless other dancehall stars. His best known hits also include Romie , World Dance and Slam .

In 2006, Beenie Man was heard in reggaetón songs by Tito 'El Bambino' ( Flow natural ) and Don Omar ( Belly danza ).

criticism

Among other things, as part of the Stop Murder Music campaign , his songs were criticized for openly antihomosexuality. According to Amnesty International USA, they contain lines such as: "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays" ( "I dream of a new Jamaica where all gays will be executed" ). Among other things, he is held responsible by the German Lesbian and Gay Association as a contributor to a smear campaign against gays in Jamaica, which contributes to an anti-gay climate, the effects of which have ranged up to brutal murders , since in his "songs open to gay bashing (gay clapping) and even to kill gay men ", writes Klaus Jetz , the federal manager of the LSVD.

In response to this criticism, which led to concert cancellations by MTV and Virgin in the USA, among other things , his concert organizers pointed out Beenie Man's signature under the so-called Reggae Compassionate Act , with which he would have distanced himself from homophobic lyrics. In Jamaica, Beenie Man denied this voluntary commitment in July 2007 (“And mi neva sign it, yuh hear saw.”) And at the same time declared that there was no need for homophobically motivated violence and murder, but that he did not support a “ gay lifestyle ” because he thinks this is ominous: “We don't need to kill dem. We just need fi tell the people dem the right ting because I not supporting a gay lifestyle because it's not wholesome to me. ” Some observers in the Jamaican press see in his statement that it is not necessary to kill gays the statement that it be "wrong" to do this.

On August 19, 2008, the Kesselhaus in the Kulturbrauerei made another attempt to have the artist sign a corresponding declaration, whereupon the LSVD demanded a public signature on the same day in order to prevent a renewed revocation. On the same day, the LSVD demands a public declaration of the artist against homophobia. On August 20, 2008, at the instigation of the FC St. Pauli Fan Club Spokesperson, a concert at Knust Club in Hamburg was canceled at short notice.

In an interview in Dancehall USA , published on November 17th, 2009, Beenie Man says: “[...] The act of sodomy was significant to me when I wrote this song. I realized that they weren't gay but pedophile, which is not a common word in my dialect, so my point of view was generalized. I am older now and have recognized this difference. (…) I've worked with gays and lesbians on stage and in photo shoots and they have done a great job. I will neither sing nor perform these songs ( Murder Music , note) in the future, nor call for violence on stage. I've performed all over the world and there has been no incident. "

Beenie Man appeared in Kampala in early December 2009 , at a time when the Ugandan parliament was debating a bill that would provide for the death penalty for certain cases of homosexuality . There, according to the Ugandan newspaper Daily Monitor , he “put a sword of words into gay people by singing and talking”.
