Fran Levstik

Fran Levstik (born September 28, 1831 in Dolnje Retje , today the municipality of Velike Lašče , Slovenia ; † November 16, 1887 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovenian poet, linguist and cultural politician.

Life

Fran Levstik was born on September 28, 1831 in Dolnje Retje near Veliki Lašče into a farming family. He attended elementary school and high school in Ljubljana , but failed to pass the final exams due to disputes with the school authorities and the catechist Anton Globočnik. In 1854 he was admitted to the seminary in Oloumuc in Moravia as a scholarship holder of the German Knights. He had to drop out of theology the following year because of a complaint about the immorality of his poetry collection, which was published in Ljubljana in 1854. He returned to his homeland via Vienna, where he heard lectures by Fran Miklošič and met Vuk Karadžić . He later served as secretary and editor. From 1861 he was secretary of the Slavic reading room in Trieste and in 1863 editor of the political newspaper Naprej von Vilhar. After a year, the publication of the newspaper was discontinued due to Levstik's criticism of the political situation and Vilhar was sentenced to a short prison term. In 1864 he became secretary of the Slovenska matica in Ljubljana, at that time the editor of Wolf's Slovenian-German dictionary. In the years 1868-69 he occasionally took part in the Slovenian nation. In 1869 he began to publish Pavlih's "entertaining and humorous newspaper" in Vienna. Around 1870 Levstik was accused of national treason for obtaining government support for the satirical newspaper Pavliha. In 1872 he received the position of screenwriter at the Lyceum Library in Ljubljana with the help of the head of the Lyceum library, Gottfried Muys and Fran Miklošič. He worked here until his death. On his return to Ljubljana, he withdrew completely from public and political life. Due to physical and mental exertion, he fell ill with a mental illness. He died in Ljubljana on November 16, 1887. Levstik showed talent for various areas of literary activity. He has worked in the fields of poetry, drama, literary criticism, and history.
