Dolnje Retje ( lnjɛ ˈɾeːtjɛ ; according to older sources also Dolenje Retje , German Unterretje ) is a small village southeast of Velike Lašče in central Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional Lower Carniola region and now belongs to the statistical region of Central Slovenia.
Surname
The name "Dolnje Retje" literally means "lower Retje" and distinguishes the village from the neighboring "Gornje Retje" (literally "upper Retje"). The name Retje (like the related name Retnje ) is derived from the plural demonym * Vrětьjane , based on the common noun * vertьje , which refers to a higher dry area in a damp or swampy area
heritage Site
A small wayside shrine from the 18th century at the crossroads in the middle of the settlement is dedicated to Rochus de Montpellier .
people
The Slovenian writer, political activist, playwright and critic Fran Levstik was born in the village in 1831 . In 1889 a plaque was unveiled over the remains of the house where he was born. In 1987 a bronze bust was also placed in the village.
