Franz Xaver Ritter von Miklosich, Slovene Fran (c) Miklošič, (born November 20, 1813 in Pichelberg near Luttenberg , in what is now the Slovenian part of Styria ; † March 7, 1891 in Vienna ) was an Austrian philologist of Slovene ethnicity. He is considered to be one of the founders of scientific Slavonic studies and one of its most important representatives in the 19th century.

Life

Miklosich, son of an under Styrian wine growers, studied with the help of his uncle, a Country Priest, (in Croatian after his secondary school education in Varazdin Varazdin ) and Marburg an der Drau (Maribor) philosophy at the University of Graz and ibid in 1838 to Dr. phil. PhD . In 1841, after studying law at the University of Vienna, he also earned the degree of Dr. jur. After the addition of the philosophical chair in Graz, he tried in vain for a habilitation at the University of Innsbruck, whereupon he worked in several law firms. With the help of Bartholomäus Jernej Kopitar , the censor of Slavic and Greek writings at the Vienna Imperial and Royal Court Library , in 1844 Miklosich was given a position as “scriptor” ( censor ), which he held until 1862.

With a review of Franz Bopp's Comparative Grammar , in which he added Slavic language examples and thus proved the necessity of researching all Slavic languages ​​as well as the compared Indo-European languages Sanskrit to Gothic, Miklosich first attracted scientific attention and thus began his Slavic work . At the Reichstag in Kremsier , in which he participated as a Slovenian MP, he was noticed by the Minister of the Interior, Graf Stadion, for his level-headed attitude, so that the latter, who was also Minister of Education, was interested in appointing Miklosich as a chair at the University of Vienna should be established for Slavic studies. When Miklosich, due to his work on the roots of Slavic languages ​​( Radices linguae slovenicae ) , published in Leipzig in 1845, was offered an appointment to the Slavic Department in Wroclaw , despite his lack of knowledge of Polish , he was initially recognized as an extraordinary candidate in 1849 and then as Full professor appointed to the newly created chair for Slavic Philology at the University of Vienna, which he held until 1886. He was dean of the philosophical faculty twice, and in 1853/54 also rector of the University of Vienna. He retired in 1886.

Miklosich was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 41B, row G1, number 25), where Dora Miklosich later found her final resting place.

• In 1848 Miklosich was elected a corresponding member, and in 1851 a real member, of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna , and in 1866 he was appointed secretary of its philosophy-historical class.
• In 1862 he became a member of the manor appointed for life and in 1864 in recognition of his services by Emperor I Franz Joseph in the knighthood raised. In 1868 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1889 he became a Privy Councilor and Councilor .
• In 1883, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, Miklosich received a medal that the Austrian Academy of Sciences had commissioned from medalist Josef Tautenhayn .
• In 1954, Miklosichgasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.

Services

Miklosich's Slavic work is extraordinarily varied and extensive. Central areas of work were the comparative grammar of the Slavic languages, the etymology of the Slavic languages ​​and the lexicography of Church Slavonic . The monographs created in the context of these interests are also of interest and use for current Slavic studies, although in some aspects they are outdated. For example, he erroneously named Old Church Slavonic as "Old Slovene" and shared the opinion of Bartholomäus Kopitar that Old Church Slavonic did not originate in the Balkans, but in the eastern Slovene-speaking area, ie in Pannonia as "Old Slovene". Miklosich, on the other hand, was pioneering in the research of loanwords as well as in person and place name research.

In the spirit of a New Europeanism with its unconscious longing of all European peoples for a common language, Miklosich also dealt with the interrelationships between the Slavic languages ​​and the neighboring non-Slavic languages ​​such as Greek , Turkish , Hungarian and especially Romanian and Albanian , beyond the Slavic languages he also became the founder of Romanian and Albanian philology. He also wrote extensive studies on dialects and migrations of the Gypsies , and in a twelve-volume work he then comprehensively presented the culture and languages ​​of the Sinti and Roma .
