Joseph Müller (also Josef Müller ; born May 2, 1825 in Brno ; † July 13, 1895 in Turin ) was an Austrian classical philologist , historian and university professor .

Life

From 1843 Müller studied philosophy and classical philology at the University of Vienna . He was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate and was then an official of the Viennese court library . In 1852 he went to the reorganization of high school studies in Milan , which at that time belonged to the Austrian Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia . There he taught German language and literature as well as Greek at the Ginnasio Liceale . In addition, on behalf of the Vienna Academy of Sciences , he was involved in the edition of previously unknown Byzantine diploma and file material.

In 1856 Müller followed a call as a full professor of German language and literature at the University of Pavia and in 1859 in the same capacity at the University of Padua . During this time he began to translate school editions and standard works of ancient language teaching into Italian, such as Georg Curtius ' Greek school grammar. Due to the political situation - the Kingdom of Italy had attacked the remaining Austrian territories in Italy as part of the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866 - Müller returned to Vienna. There he became a corresponding member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences with confirmation of August 3, 1866, but there was no job for him as a university lecturer.

Müller returned to Italy in 1867. He became a full professor of Greek studies at the University of Turin and continued to improve the teaching material in the field of classical philology in Italian schools. In July 1872 he was one of the founders of the Rivista di filologia e d'istruzione classica (RIFC), which is still one of the leading organs in this field. With his translations of Karl Otfried Müller's two-volume History of Greek Literature and the three-volume Greek History by Ernst Curtius , he made classics of German antiquity accessible to a larger Italian group. Müller died in office in 1895.
