The University of Pavia ( Italian Università degli studi di Pavia ; Latin Alma Ticinensis Universitas ) is one of the oldest universities in Italy and all of Europe .
history
As early as 825 , Pavia was the seat of a famous school of rhetoric opened by Emperor Lothar . It remained an important educational center throughout the Middle Ages. In the 11th century there is also evidence of a legal branch. Finally, in 1361, Emperor Charles IV initiated the establishment of a Studium generale for Pope Boniface IX. granted the same rights as the University of Bologna and the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1485 , the Studium generale was formally elevated to a university by an imperial decree . The reputation of the University of Pavia grew in the 15th century; but after the severe damage the city suffered as a result of the siege of 1525 , and due to the reactionary Spanish domination, it lost its scientific importance again. It was not until the second half of the 18th century that it began to recover , thanks to the support of the now ruling Austrian regents Maria Theresia and Joseph II .
In the 1960s, business and engineering courses were added to traditional faculties.
The university belongs to the Coimbra group .
