Pio Ortelli

Pio Ortelli (born January 12, 1910 in Mendrisio ; † June 20, 1963 there ) was a Swiss educator and writer .

Life

Pio Ortelli was the son of the small business owner Martino Ortelli. He attended high school in Lugano and studied humanities at the University of Pavia . He then initially worked for the radio in Italian-speaking Switzerland and later a teacher of Italian , Latin and history at the lower secondary school in Mendrisio. There he was appointed rector in 1954 and remained in that position until he died.

Writing

Pio Ortelli worked for the daily Corriere del Ticino and for the cultural section of the Giornale del Popolo . From 1937 to 1953 he published a collection of poems , three collections of short stories and two volumes of travel prose. His most important novel , which appeared in 1948, was the autobiographical family novel La cava della sabbia , which was reprinted in 1970 by Pio Fontana (1927-2001) with a portrait sketch.
