Ubaldo Monico

Ubaldo Monico (born May 3, 1912 in Dongio ; † January 5, 1983 ibid) was a Swiss educator and artist .

Life

Ubaldo Monico was the son of the station director Agostino Monico († 1918) and his wife Elisa (née Fusi). He had five siblings.

Monico attended the teachers' seminar in Locarno from 1929 to 1931 and then studied languages ​​at the University of Freiburg . In 1949 he received his licentiate and was employed as an Italian teacher at the Progymnasium in Lugano from 1950 to 1959 . In 1959 he began as an art teacher at the Technical College in Lugano-Trevano and worked there until 1971.

He was also active in society and was involved in issues of landscape protection .

Artistic and literary work

Ubaldo Monico worked as a prose writer and author of articles on art in the magazines Stella Alpina , Sci e Picozza and Cenobio. Self-taught , he trained as an engraver , initially creating figurative works and after 1955 turned to abstract art. He mainly made woodcuts but also copperplate engravings , ink drawings and oil paintings .

He was in contact with the Ticino wood carvers Giovanni Bianconi and Aldo Patocchi (1907–1986).

From 1947 his works of art were exhibited both in Switzerland and abroad. He went on many study trips to various European countries, but also to Egypt and Jordan .

Prices

  • In 1952 Ubaldo Monico won the 2nd prize in the international competition for criticism at the 26th Venice Biennale .
