The Corriere del Ticino (CdT) is a Swiss daily newspaper in the canton of Ticino .

history

The Corriere del Ticino was founded on December 28, 1891 by Agostino Soldati in Lugano . Soldati was president of the “mixed government” of the canton of Ticino , which tried to overcome the fierce controversy between conservatives and liberals after the Ticino putsch of 1890. Initially, the newspaper was an organ of the Unione democratica ticinese and was directed from 1892 to 1907 by Giovanni Anastasi . It was only under the leadership of Lindoro Regolatti (1908–1912) and above all Vittore Frigerio (1912–1957) that the newspaper developed into an independent paper with no party political background.

The worldview of the newspaper was close to right-wing liberalism, and the Corriere del Ticino showed great sympathy for fascist Italy in the 1920s and 1930s . However , the newspaper rejected so-called irredentism (entitlement to Italian-speaking areas outside Italy).

A special feature of the newspaper was the wide space it allowed for articles by Ticino and Italian writers in the field of culture. In 1926 it was the first Ticino newspaper to introduce a sports section.

While the newspaper was initially focused on Lugano, the CdT began reporting across the cantons and across Switzerland in the 1960s. Partly because of this differentiation and under the direction of Guido Locarnini , the paper advanced to become the leading organ in the canton of Ticino.

In 2012 the external newsrooms were merged with those of the Giornale del Popolo , and in 2013 the business and sports newsrooms were also merged . This was intended to secure the continuation of the Giornale del Popolo , which was endangered by the general decline in newspaper circulation and the launch of the free newspaper 20 minuti in 2011 . The cooperation ended at the end of 2017.

organization

At the end of the 20th century, the circulation was around 40,000 copies. The newspaper employed around 350 people, half of whom only worked sporadically. The company's headquarters are in Muzzano . Since 1941 the company has been run by a board of directors, in which the Soldati family has always been in charge.
