The Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum ( Italian : Pontificio Ateneo Regina Apostolorum ) is an international university under papal law and has its seat in the city of Rome ( Gianicolense ).

The college was founded by the order of the Legionaries of Christ on September 15, 1993, and in 1999 over 3,000 students were studying at the college. Jesús Villagrasa LC has been the rector since August 2013, succeeding Pedro Barrajón LC.

history

The college was canonically established with the faculties of theology and philosophy by the Congregation for Catholic Education on September 15, 1993. On July 11, 1998, Pope John Paul II awarded her the title of Pontifical College. On April 23, 1999, the Congregation for Catholic Education established the Institute for Higher Religious Studies, which is attached to the theological faculty. On December 31, 2000, Cardinal Angelo Sodano inaugurated the current building of the college. The Faculty of Bioethics was approved on May 21, 2001 by the Congregation for Catholic Education.

Goal setting

The aim is to train Christian leaders, especially in the ecclesiastical field, and to develop research at a high scientific level in order to make a contribution to the world of spirit and culture, which fill society with a Christian spirit and provide answers can address the theoretical and existential questions of man, in full accordance with the Magisterium of the Church. The range of academic courses that the Pontifical University would like to offer its own students is based on a holistic education that takes into account the diverse aspects of the human person.

Faculties

There are three faculties: philosophy, theology and bioethics (the latter was added in 2001). The three faculties offer the following courses:

  • Bachelor. The standard period of study is three years (six semesters).
  • Licentiate. The standard period of study is two years (four semesters).
  • Doctorate: Consists of the preparation of a dissertation under the direction of a lecturer, in which the candidate makes a personal research contribution to the subject area of ​​one of the three faculties. The minimum period of study is two years. After the defense of the doctoral thesis and its publication, the doctorate is awarded.

Faculty of Theology

The college is an international community that feels called to develop a Catholic teaching and culture capable of filling today's society with a Christian spirit. Its aim is to provide the Church with qualified professors, spiritual leaders, seminary instructors, priests, religious and lay people who are trained in the teaching of dogmatics, moral theology and theology of spirituality.

Institute for Higher Religious Studies (ISSR)

The institute is affiliated with the theological faculty and awards the academic titles of Bachelor and Licentiate in religious studies. It is aimed primarily at lay people and religious who are interested in the study and in-depth knowledge of religious studies, who want to grow in their own spiritual life or who want to prepare for a job as a religion teacher at elementary or middle school.

Philosophical Faculty

The academic activities of the philosophical faculty are geared towards solving the existential problems of humans. The aim is to show the harmony between philosophical reason and the Christian worldview and to offer rational instruments that are suitable for use in speculative theology in order to enable dialogue with today's pluralistic world. The faculty's objective is threefold:

  • to offer a profound and organic philosophical education
  • prepare students to conduct their theology studies on a high academic level and in a thorough manner.
  • to meet the demands of the new evangelization and the questions posed by the world of culture.

Faculty of Bioethics

The world's first faculty for bioethics offers a complete course with 3 possible degrees: Bachelor, Licentiate, Doctorate. The aim of the Faculty is to train professionals who are capable of competently responding to the numerous and difficult ethical problems that constantly arise in the field of biomedical and biological sciences with regard to the dignity of man and the defense of the life of every human individual , from conception to natural death. The faculty also offers a master's degree in bioethics and international summer courses for continuing education.

Institutes

Institute for Advanced Studies on Women (ISSD)

The Institute for Higher Studies on Women (ISSD) is the first in Italy for systematic and interdisciplinary studies on women in their various dimensions and areas of activity. The aim is to promote a truthful view of femininity and the dignity of women by means of training opportunities in the intellectual, interpersonal and social area in order to promote the position and influence of women in society.

Institute for Bioethics and Human Rights

The Institute for Bioethics and Human Rights emerged from the Faculty of Bioethics and has the objective of analyzing and studying topics of bioethics in relation to human rights. The analyzes and studies are based on a humanism of Christian inspiration, applied to bioethics, and flow into teaching and research and serve to promote activities to disseminate ideas.

Institute "Science and Faith"

The Science and Faith Institute , inspired by the guidelines of the encyclical Fides et Ratio of Pope John Paul II, is dedicated to research and teaching on topics related to the relationship between science and faith in order to offer answers to the new, urgent, ethical and anthropological questions raised by inexorable developments in science and technology. Through its teaching and research activities, it strives to show points of contact that serve the dialogue and the common search for the truth. The institute promotes research activities, training courses, lectures, congresses and meetings on issues relating to the relationship between science and faith.

Institute "Sacerdos"

The aim of the institute "Sacerdos" is to promote a spirituality of the ecclesiastical community in the clergy. Its main purpose is to provide ongoing formation and support for the perseverance of priests, through learning from one another, sharing experiences and new suggestions for pastoral care, as well as opportunities for fraternal gathering and fellowship.

Institute for Business Ethics and Social Studies “FIDELIS”

The Institute for Business Ethics and Social Studies FIDELIS is a research center for applied ethics that seeks to promote a holistic view of economic activities that respects the dignity of the person and is geared towards the common good. The institute is part of an international network of research centers that are united in the “Fidelis International Institute for Business Ethics”.

Study Center "John Paul II."

The study center "John Paul II." , established in 2010, is building up a collection of publications, writings, photographs and film material on Pope John Paul II to create a library and cinematheque dedicated to this Pope. The center also aims to convey and study the topics of particular concern to Pope John Paul II, and thus to explore the creative contributions of his thought and teaching.

Institute for Higher Humanistic Studies

The institute was established in May 2010 in cooperation with the European University of Rome and the Academy Vivarium Novum and aims to promote the rediscovery of classic, humanistic values ​​in their timeless validity, in order to complete academic training and broaden the cultural horizon .

The master’s degree is organized by the Faculty of Philosophy in collaboration with the Institute for Philosophy and Clinical, Existential Anthropology, Counseling, Research and Education ( IFACEcrf ) and aims to convey instruments that come from the human sciences and allow the profession of a philosophical life coach whose job it is to offer support to those who are searching for the meaning of their existence.

Masters in Science and Faith

The master's degree in Science and Faith, organized by the Faculty of Philosophy, is part of the STOQ (Science, Theology and the Ontological Quest) project, in which several Pontifical Universities are involved. It is aimed at professionals in relevant fields who wish to acquire or deepen knowledge of the relationship between science and faith in the field of research and culture.

Master in bioethics

The bioethics master’s program is aimed at those who want to use better knowledge of bioethics for their professional activities.

Masters Thesis, Family, and Woman Leadership

This master’s degree is organized and sponsored by the Institute for Higher Studies on Women. It is the first Masters course in Europe dedicated exclusively to studying and researching new solutions to the problem of how to combine family and work. It is intended to promote a new institutional culture that is shaped by seeing employees as people. It offers a thorough, interdisciplinary education that allows students to acquire specialized knowledge that is necessary to implement organizational changes that meet the requirements of the profitability of companies, but at the same time serve the well-being of the employees.

Master of Architecture, Sacred Art and Liturgy

The master's degree in Architecture, Sacred Art and Liturgy is carried out in collaboration with the European University of Rome and aims to make the great legacy of experiences and reflections on beauty and artistic creativity in the Christian tradition accessible, in order to promote a specific expression in art and architecture . The master’s degree should make it possible again to propose Christian contemporary art with a clear line and without hesitation, and thus wants to promote a maturation process that affects both church clients, as well as architects, engineers, artists, art historians and seminarians - ultimately all who are in contact with the civil authorities in the respective countries and are responsible for the execution of new works or the preservation of the cultural assets of the church.

Courses

International advanced training course in bioethics

The course is dedicated to a selected topic, which is studied in a fundamental way in order to grasp the essential elements. The individual contents are lectured by lecturers from the Faculty of Bioethics and invited experts from different countries. In addition to the lectures, there are activities for reflection and discussion in order to encourage the active participation of all course participants.

The course takes place in June and July and lasts two weeks.

International Summer Course of the Institute for Higher Studies on Women

The institute offers an international summer course that deals with various problems relating to the world of women in an interdisciplinary, stimulating and innovative perspective. The subjects of the courses, which change every year, deal with the image of women, their self-image and their situation in the various social and cultural areas. The aim of the courses is always to offer a precise analysis of the various current problems, as it corresponds to a scientific, philosophical study.

Elements from different countries are taken into account.

Course for trainers in seminars

Every year there is an international training course for those responsible for training in seminars. The course, which is carried out in theoretical and practical sessions, takes into account the developments and problems of contemporary culture and offers a holistic view of the training process. The course is aimed at bishops, rectors, spiritualists and other formators. He is characterized by a brotherly spirit carried by an authentic priestly spirituality.

Spiritual renewal courses for priests

The course is sponsored by the “Sacerdos” Institute and takes place every year in Jerusalem. The venue is the Pontifical Institute “Notre Dame of Jerusalem”. The Institute for Higher Religious Studies has been running training courses specially designed for women in consecrated life for about ten years. Course "Exorcism and Prayers for Liberation"

The college has been offering courses in exorcism since 2005 . The aim is to enable priests to cast out evil in the form of demons or the devil. On April 19, 2011 an "Exorcism Conference" took place in the Vatican, which was organized by the Athenaeum. Its member Carlo Climati said: “The Internet has made it much easier to find information about Satanism today than it used to be. The institutional research activities are coordinated by the Research Department, which promotes extensive collaboration between the faculties and institutes as well as with other universities, research centers and cultural, private or public institutions.
