The Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies ( Italian : Pontificio Istituto di Studi Arabi e d'Islamistica , PISAI ) is a Catholic university of canon law based in Rome and Cairo .

history

The institute was founded in 1926 on the initiative of the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) by the Holy See . It was initially based in Tunis and was moved to Rome in 1956. In 1960 it was established as the Pontifical Institute by Pope Paul VI. accepted. The Dar Comboni Center for Arabic Studies in Cairo has been part of PISAI since 1997.

Institute

The aim of the institute is to enable Christians to be properly prepared for the discussion and interreligious dialogue with Islam .

About 25 professors from different Christian denominations and from the Islamic tradition taught about 1300 students in English, French and Arabic. The degree in Arabic and Islamic studies is possible as a diploma, licentiate and doctorate. The compulsory subject of all students is the study of the Arabic language, which enables access to the basic texts of Islam. Doctoral studies are possible in Arabic and Islamic studies .

The Grand Chancellor is Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi , Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education ; Stanley Lubungo MAfr, Superior General of the White Fathers , has been Chancellor since 2016 . The president of the college is Diego Sarrió Cucarella MAfr.

The PISAI is supported by the Pontifical Foundation " Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice (CAPP) ".
