Emblem of the congregation

The Congregation of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus ( abbreviation : MCCJ ) missionary religious order of the Roman Catholic Church , which is divided into the men's community of the Comboni missionaries and the women's community of the Comboni missionary sisters . They were founded in 1867 and 1872 by Daniele Comboni .

history

Daniele Comboni founded two communities in Verona, Italy , which are now called Comboni Missionaries (founded in 1872) and Comboni Missionaries (1867). Comboni was the first to send women to do missionary work in Central Africa. He was particularly involved in the mission and against the slave trade in Sudan . The missionary sisters and missionaries received support mainly from Austria and Germany, especially from the Cologne Mission Association and the Vienna Marienverein.

After Comboni's death, his missionary institute was converted into a congregation . The first re-establishment in the German-speaking area took place in 1895 in Milland, then Austria (near Brixen in South Tyrol ). There, German-speaking missionaries prepared for their mission, the Italian-speaking ones in Verona. After the First World War , the Congregation was divided by a decree of the Propaganda Fide of July 27, 1923. The German-speaking congregation was named Missionaries Sons of the Sacred Heart ( Italian Missionari Figli del Sacro Cuore di Gesù , MFSC), the Italian Congregation called itself Sons of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Italian: Figli del Sacro Cuore di Gesù , FSCJ) or Sons of Sacred Heart of Verona .

In 1908 the MFSC acquired a second house in Messendorf near Graz for the training of the missionary brothers, in 1920 the first German house ( Josefstal ) was opened in Schrezheim near Ellwangen . Another mission seminar was opened in 1929 in nearby Bad Mergentheim . A year earlier, another house was acquired in Mellatz near Lindenberg in the Allgäu . Further locations were created across Germany.

On September 2, 1975, at a general chapter of the MFSC and FSCJ in Ellwangen, the reunification of the two congregations was decided and carried out at the general chapter on June 22, 1979. The congregation named itself Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (MCCJ) . In the course of the merger, the German-speaking Province of the Congregation of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus was established on October 5, 1979 .

Structure and fields of activity

The congregation is divided into 31 provinces and delegations. The administration of the order is in Rome . The German-speaking province (DSP) has eight branches, five of which are in Germany, two in Austria and one in South Tyrol. The responsibility of each province lies with the provincial superior and his councilors. This body is elected every three years by secret ballot by the members of the respective province. In 2008 about 1,740 Comboni missionaries ( priests and brothers) were working in about 40 countries worldwide.

The XVII. The General Chapter of the Comboni Missionaries in Rome in 2009 elected Enrique Sánchez González to succeed Teresino Serra as the new Superior General of the Order.

Comboni missionaries are active in a wide variety of areas of mission : from initial evangelization to pastoral care in the suburbs of the metropolises, the training of pastoral workers , engagement for Indians and Afro-Americans , vocational pastoral work to media work.

criticism

Around 2010 a group of former priestly students of the Verona Fathers , the British arm of the Comboni missionaries, formed. She accused employees and priests of the Order of widespread sexual abuse in the 1960s and 1970s. Eleven cases ended in court in 2014 with compensation payments from the Comboni Order; further proceedings are pending. The friars John Pinkman († 1984), Luciano Fulvi († 2004), Romano Nardo and Domenico Valmaggia († 2011) were among the central figures of abuse in this process. At that time they all justified their sexual assaults against the children and young people with "religious acts".
