Camillo Ballin MCCJ (born June 24, 1944 in Fontaniva , Padua Province , Italy ; † April 12, 2020 in Kuwait ) was an Italian religious , Roman Catholic bishop and vicar apostolic in northern Arabia .

Life

Camillo Ballin joined the order of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (MCCJ) in 1965 , made profession in 1968 and was ordained priest in 1969 in Castelletto Sul Garda , Verona . After studying Arabic in Syria and Lebanon , he first worked in the parish of St. Joseph in Zamalek , a district of Cairo; from 1972 to 1977 he was pastor in Cairo. Subsequently, he studied from 1977 to 1980 at the St. Esprit University (Université Saint-Esprit de Kaslik (USEK)) in Kaslik in Beirut and at the Pontifical Oriental Institute (Pontificio Instituto Orientale) in Rome Oriental liturgy. From 1981 to 1990 he was a professor at the Cairo Theological Institute and superior of the Comboni missionaries in Egypt . From 1990 to 1997 he set up a teaching facility for religion teachers in Sudan . Between 1997 and 2000 he received his doctorate in Rome with a thesis on the church history of Sudan, especially during the Mahdiyyah period (1881–1898). In 2000 he became Director of the Dar Comboni Center of Arab and Islamic Studies in Cairo and Professor of Church History at the Inter-Rite Seminar. In 2004 he published the well-known works in Arabic, "The Ways of the Spirit" and "History of the Church", among many other writings.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Titular Bishop of Arna in 2005 and appointed him fourth Vicar Apostolic for Kuwait . He was ordained bishop on September 2, 2005 in the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Kuwait City by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and later Archbishop of Naples, Crescenzio Cardinal Sepe ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Kuwait, Archbishop Giuseppe De Andrea , and his predecessor Francis Micallef . His motto was "In verbo tuo".

In 2011 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic in the Vicariate Apostolic Northern Arabia , which includes the Gulf States of Kuwait , Bahrain , Qatar and Saudi Arabia .
