The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia ( Latin : Apostolicus Vicariatus Arabiae Meridionalis ) is a Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate based in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and includes the Arab states of Yemen , Oman and UAE.

history

The forerunner of today's Apostolic Vicariate Southern Arabia is that of Pius IX on January 21, 1857 . Apostolic Prefecture in Yemen founded out of the Apostolic Vicariate Galla in Abyssinia . It covered the entire Arabian Peninsula and Somaliland and was given to the Capuchins as a mission area. But the prefecture was dissolved again in 1859. On May 4, 1888, Pope Leo XIII. the territory was again detached from the Apostolic Vicariate Galla and the Apostolic Vicariate Aden founded. The name of the Vicariate changed on June 28, 1889 to Apostolic Vicariate Arabia . On June 29, 1953, the area around Kuwait of 17,900 km² was separated and the independent Apostolic Prefecture of Kuwait was established. In 1973 the bishopric was moved from Aden to Abu Dhabi. Pope Benedict XVI founded today's Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia by renaming on May 31, 2011 . At the same time, the areas around Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia were added to the Apostolic Vicariate of Kuwait, which was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia .

The Vicariate assigned to the Capuchins covered the Arabian Peninsula (excluding Kuwait) with its size of 3,143,669 km². Between 1950 and 2010 the number of Catholics living in it grew from around 6,000 to over 2,000,000, with the enormous number of Catholic guest workers in these countries contributing to this. Today the 23 parishes of the vicariate are looked after by nine diocesan priests and 56 religious priests . At the same time there are also 62 nuns .

today

About 2.5 million Catholics live on the territory of the Episcopal Vicariate Arabia South. They come from more than 90 countries, mainly from the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan, including all oriental ritual churches in Arabia, for example Maronites from Lebanon or Syro-Malabars and Syro-Malankars from India .

As a leading Christian pastor in exclusively Muslim countries, Paul Hinder's hands are largely tied with regard to social criticism (e.g. regarding the working conditions of foreign employees) at the risk of deportation.

The current situation of Christians in many Arab states , especially in Saudi Arabia, is bad. There it is still forbidden to build churches and hold non- Muslim worship services (see under: Persecution of Christians ). In the United Arab Emirates, the Emir of Dubai has given the Catholic Church a piece of land to build on with the Antonius Church, which will be inaugurated in 2013.

There are seven parishes in the United Arab Emirates, four in Oman and four in Yemen.

After the death of Bishop Camillo Ballin in mid-April 2020, Paul Hinder took over the leadership of the vicariate for Northern Arabia with Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia at the request of Pope Francis until further notice.
