Since April 2020 he has also been in charge of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia and is therefore responsible for all of Arabia.
Life
Paul Hinder grew up with his three brothers Wilhelm, Pius and Josef in Stehrenberg near Weinfelden . He entered the Capuchin Order in 1962 , made his profession on September 18, 1966 , studied at the Capuchin theological seminary in Solothurn and was ordained a priest there on July 4, 1967 . After several years of pastoral care and as head of the novitiate , he became regional superior of the German-speaking Swiss Capuchins and in 1989 provincial of the Swiss Capuchins. In 1994 Paul Hinder was elected to the General Council of the Capuchin Order with responsibility for the German and French-speaking provinces as well as for the Capuchins in the Middle East .
As it has been customary since the 19th century for the bishop in Arabia to come from the Capuchins, in 2003 Paul Hinder was appointed auxiliary bishop in the southern and northern Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia by Pope John Paul II and was named titular bishop of Macon .
He received his episcopal ordination on January 30, 2004 in the St. Joseph's Cathedral in Abu Dhabi, Crescenzio Cardinal Sepe , Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giuseppe De Andrea , Nuncio in Arabia, and Bishop Giovanni Bernardo Gremoli OfMCap, Vicar Apostolic in Arabia. On March 21, 2005 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Arabia and Yemen based in Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates (UAE).
With the division of the Apostolic Vicariate Arabia into an Apostolic Vicariate Southern Arabia and an Apostolic Vicariate Northern Arabia, Paul Hinder took over the Apostolic Vicariate Southern Arabia on May 31, 2011, which is one of the world's largest dioceses with an area of over 900,000 square kilometers. Regarding the alleged danger of Islam for Europe, he believes that the danger lies in the religious lukewarmness of Europeans.
After the death of Camillo Ballin MCCI, Bishop and Vicar Apostolic in Northern Arabia and Kuwait, in mid-April 2020, at the request of Pope Francis, Hinder also took over the leadership of the Vicariate for Northern Arabia including Bahrain on May 13, 2020 as Apostolic Administrator until further notice , Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
