Zamalek ( Arabic الزمالك az-Zamālik ) is a district of Cairo . It is located on the northern part of the island of Gezira , one of two islands belonging to the city in the Nile . The other island is Roda . The southern part of the island is simply called el-Gezira  /الجزيرة / al-Ǧazīra  / 'the island'; both parts of the city are often combined as Zamalek.

Zamalek is a residential and business district. In addition to foreign companies, numerous embassies , including the German Embassy in Cairo , have their headquarters here. Foreigners, especially embassy staff, prefer to live here. The largest building is the Cairo Tower ( Cairo Tower ). The quarters of the American University of Cairo (AUC) students are also located here . The Palestinian scholar Edward Said lived and worked here during his exile .

Halfway up the island is the Zamalek Palace . Built by the Khedive Ismail to accommodate guests of honor for the opening of the Suez Canal (including Empress Eugénie of France ), the palace is now a hotel in the Marriott chain. Most of the historic rooms have been restored and are accessible to hotel guests.

The Cairo Opera House is located in the southern part of the island .

The main traffic axis is the Strait of July 26th, which crosses the northern part of the island in an east-west axis. Three bridges each on the east and west banks of the island connect Zamalek with the surrounding districts. Around 2017, the island is to be connected to local public transport by a metro station .

Others

One of the most successful football clubs in Egypt, Zamalek SC , is based in the district.
