Menghisteab Tesfamariam MCCJ (born December 24, 1948 in Berakit , Eritrea ) is a Roman Catholic bishop and first head of the Eritrean Catholic Church . He has headed the Asmara Eparchy since 2001 and was appointed Archeparch and Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Eritrea in 2015 .

Life

Menghisteab Tesfamariam joined the order of the Comboni Missionaries on September 1, 1971 . He made his temporary and on March 15, 1978 his perpetual vows on June 25, 1973 . He was ordained a religious priest on February 18, 1979 . After that, Tesfamariam was parish vicar in Namula in Uganda from 1979 to 1985 . From 1985 to 1990 this was followed by a training activity for postulants of the Comboni missionaries in Addis Ababa . From 1990, he graduated in Chicago a postgraduateand then from 1991 to 1996 trained the students of the Comboni Missionaries in Chicago. After his return to Asmara in 1996, he was primarily responsible for coordinating pastoral work in the Asmara diocese . His appointment as bishop of Asmara was made on 25 June 2001. His predecessor Zekarias Yohannes gave him on 16 September 2001, the episcopal ordination , he assisted as co-consecrators the bishops Tesfamariam Bedho of Keren and Luca Milesi OFM Cap of Barentu . Bishop Tesfamariam was a co-consecrator of Kidane Yebio as Bishop of Keren.
