Gianfranco Masserdotti
Gianfranco Masserdotti MCCJ , also Dom Franco , (born September 13, 1941 in Brescia , Italy , † September 17, 2006 in Balsas , Brazil) was an Italian religious and Catholic bishop of Balsas in Brazil .
Life
Gianfranco Masserdotti joined the order of the Comboni Missionaries and was ordained a priest on March 26, 1966 . After completing a doctoral degree in sociology at the University of Trento , he went to mission in 1972. He worked in northeastern Brazil and from 1974 was Vicar General of the Prelature Balsas. In 1979 he worked as assistant general for his order in Rome. In 1986 he went back to northeast Brazil and was provincial superior of his order from 1987 to 1992 . From 1988 to 1994 Masserdotti was also a member of the Conselho Missionário Nacional (COMINA) , the national mission council of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB).
On November 22, 1995, Gianfranco Masserdotti was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Balsas diocese by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination donated him on March 2, 1996 his predecessor Rino Carlesi MCCJ; Co- consecrators were Paulo Eduardo Andrade Ponte , Bishop of Itapipoca , and Aldo Gerna MCCJ, Bishop of São Mateus . With the age-related resignation of Rino Carlesis on April 15, 1998, he succeeded him as Bishop of Balsas.
In 1999 Masserdotti was elected to succeed Bishop Erwin Kräutler CPPS as chairman of the Indian Missionary Council (Conselho Indigenista Missionário, CIMI) and as deputy chairman of the mission committee of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB). In 2004 he became a member of the CELAM Commission Dimensão Missionária de Além Fronteiras , a commission of the Latin American Bishops' Conference (CELAM) to coordinate and promote missions.
Masserdotti died as a result of a traffic accident and was buried in balsas.
