Aldo Gerna

Aldo Gerna MCCJ (born May 7, 1931 in Arigna ) is an Italian-Brazilian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of São Mateus in Brazil .

Life

Aldo Gerna, born in a town that is now part of Ponte in Valtellina , joined the order of the Comboni Missionaries and was ordained a priest on December 22, 1956 . In November 1957 he went to Brazil and from then on worked in the diocese of São Mateus, initially as a parish pastor, later he rose to the position of vicar general of the diocese. On July 1, 1970, after the health-related resignation of Bishop José Dalvit , Gerna became vicar capitular of the diocese of São Mateus.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on May 18, 1971 Bishop of São Mateus. The Archbishop of Vitória , João Batista da Mota e Albuquerque , gave him episcopal ordination on August 1st of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Luís Gonzaga Peluso , Bishop of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim , and Quirino Adolfo Schmitz, OFM , Bishop of Teófilo Otoni . In September 1976, Bishop Gerna acquired Brazilian citizenship. On May 13, 2005, the city of Sondria granted him honorary citizenship.
