The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vitória ( Latin Archidioecesis Victoriensis Sancti Spiritus , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Vitória do Espírito Santo ) is a in Brazil located Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Vitória in the state of Espírito Santo .

history

The Archdiocese of Vitória was on November 15, 1895 by Pope Leo XIII. from the cession of territory by the diocese of Niterói as the diocese of Espírito Santo and subordinated to the archbishopric of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro as a suffragan . On February 16, 1958, the diocese Espírito Santo gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the dioceses Cachoeiro de Itapemirim and São Mateus .

On February 16, 1958, the diocese Espírito Santo was raised to an archdiocese and renamed the Archdiocese of Vitória . The Archdiocese of Vitória gave up parts of its territory on April 23, 1990 to establish the Diocese of Colatina .
