The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maceió ( lat. : Archidioecesis Maceiensis ) is in Brazil located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Maceió in the state of Alagoas .

history

The Archdiocese of Maceió was founded on July 2, 1900 by Pope Leo XIII. established with the papal bull Postremis hisce temporibus from cession of territory of the diocese of Olinda as diocese of Alagoas and subordinated to the archbishopric of São Salvador da Bahia as a suffragan diocese. The diocese of Alagoas was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Olinda as a suffragan on December 5, 1910. On April 3, 1916, the Diocese of Alagoas gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Penedo . The diocese of Alagoas changed its name to the Diocese of Maceió on August 25, 1917 .

On February 13, 1920, the diocese of Maceió was raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Maceió gave on February 10, 1962 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Palmeira dos Índios .
