José Carlos Melo CM (born June 4, 1930 in Codó ; † May 30, 2017 in Maceió ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Maceió .

Life

José Carlos Melo joined the religious community of the Lazarists and was ordained a priest on July 31, 1955 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in São Salvador da Bahia and titular bishop of Ceramus on July 10, 1991 . The Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia , Lucas Cardinal Moreira Neves OP , donated him episcopal ordination on September 28 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Vicente Joaquim Zico CM, Archbishop of Belém do Pará , and Paulo Eduardo Andrade Ponte , Archbishop of São Luís do Maranhão .

On June 2, 1999 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in São Salvador da Bahia, archbishop ad personam and titular archbishop pro hac vice of Ceramus . On May 31, 2000 he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Maceió .

When Edvaldo Gonçalves Amarals SDB retired on July 3, 2002, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Maceió. On November 22nd, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.
