Paulo Eduardo Andrade Ponte (born June 24, 1931 in Fortaleza , Ceará , Brazil ; † March 15, 2009 in São Luís , Maranhão , Brazil) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of São Luís do Maranhão .

Life

Paulo Eduardo Andrade Ponte studied from 1945 to 1949 at the seminary in Fortaleza and from 1950 to 1954 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest on April 3, 1954 in Rome . In 1957 he received his doctorate in dogmatics at the Gregoriana . He was initially active in pastoral care, later professor for dogmatic theology at the diocesan seminary in Fortaleza and also spiritual . From 1958 to 1971 he was professor and director of the ICRE - Institute for Religious Studies (Instituto de Ciências Religiosas) in Fortaleza.

On June 25, 1971, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Itapipoca . He was ordained episcopate by José de Medeiros Delgado , Archbishop of Fortaleza , on November 21 of the same year; Co-consecrators were Miguel Fenelon Câmara Filho , Auxiliary Bishop in Fortaleza, and Manuel Edmilson da Cruz , Auxiliary Bishop in São Luís do Maranhão.

On March 20, 1984, he was named Archbishop of São Luís do Maranhão by Pope John Paul II . On September 21, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation.

He was involved in various bodies such as CELAM . From 1987 to 1991 he was vice-chairman of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference CNBB and also a member of COINCAT ( International Council for Catechesis ) from 1987 to 1992.
