The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Fortaleza ( Latin Archidioecesis Fortalexiensis , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Fortaleza ) is a in Brazil located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Fortaleza in the state of Ceará .

history

The Archdiocese of Fortaleza was on June 6, 1854 by Pope Pius IX. established with the Apostolic Constitution Pro animarum salute from cession of territory by the Diocese of Olinda as the Diocese of Ceará . The diocese of Ceará was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia as a suffragan . On December 5, 1910, the diocese of Ceará was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Olinda as a suffragan. The diocese of Ceará gave up on October 20, 1914 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Crato .

On November 10, 1915, the diocese of Ceará was by Pope Benedict XV. with the Apostolic Constitution Catholicae Religionis Bonum raised to the archbishopric and renamed the Archdiocese of Fortaleza . At the same time, the diocese of Sobral was established from the territory of the new archdiocese . The Archdiocese of Fortaleza gave up other parts of its territory on May 7, 1938 to found the Limoeiro do Norte , on January 28, 1961 to found the Iguatu and on March 13, 1971 to found the Itapipoca and Quixadá dioceses .
