The Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia ( Latin : Archidioecesis Sancti Salvatoris in Brasilia ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in the third largest city in Brazil , Salvador , in the state of Bahia . It is the metropolitan archbishopric and oldest diocese in the country, whose metropolitan also holds the dignity of the primate of Brazil.

history

The diocese was founded on February 25, 1551 as the diocese of São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos by Pope Julius III. founded out of the Portuguese archdiocese of Funchal , and subordinated to this as a suffragan. The first bishop was Pedro Fernandes Sardinha . On November 16, 1676 the diocese was by Innocent XI. raised to the archbishopric; the first archbishop was Gaspar Barata de Mendonça .

In its history, the archbishopric gave several territorial shares for the establishment of new dioceses. Most recently, on December 15, 2010, the diocese of Camaçari and on November 22, 2017 the diocese of Cruz das Almas were detached and placed under the archbishopric of São Salvador da Bahia as suffragan dioceses .
