The Archdiocese of Mariana ( Latin Archidioecesis Marianensis , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Mariana ) is in Brazil located Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Mariana in the state of Minas Gerais .

history

The diocese of Mariana was established on December 6, 1745 by Pope Benedict XIV with the Apostolic Constitution Candor lucis aeternae from cession of territory from the diocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro as the diocese of Mariana . The diocese of Mariana was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia as a suffragan . When it was founded, it was the sixth largest jurisdiction in Brazil in terms of area.

On June 6, 1854, the Mariana diocese gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diamantina diocese . The diocese of Mariana was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro as a suffragan on April 27, 1892. On August 4, 1904, the Diocese of Mariana gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Pouso Alegre .

The diocese of Mariana was raised to an archbishopric on May 1, 1906 by Pope Pius X with the Apostolic Constitution Sempiternam humani generis . On July 18, 1918, the Archdiocese of Mariana gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Aterrado . Further territories were ceded on February 11, 1921 to found the Belo Horizonte diocese , February 1, 1924 to found the Juiz de Fora diocese , March 28, 1942 to found the Leopoldina diocese , and May 21, 1960 to found the São João diocese del Rei and on June 14, 1965 to found the diocese of Itabira .
